An earthquake of instantaneous magnitude 5.7

struck the coast of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The hypocentre was located at a depth of only 5 km. The epicentre was located 16 km east of Stolac. The strong earthquake occurred at 23:07:49 local time and jolted many people out of their sleep. But it did not stop there: the earthquake caused a rockfall and a rock crashed into a house. A woman died and several people were injured. In addition, minor damage to buildings was reported in the towns of Stolac, Ljubinje and Mostar, mostly due to cracks in the houses. At the EMSC there are 2 perception reports. The earthquake was felt in large parts of the Western Balkans. There have already been 12 aftershocks. The strongest had a magnitude of 4.4.

Tectonic situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina

The earthquake occurred in the coastal region and only about 40 km north of the well-known holiday resort of Dubrovnik on the Adriatic Sea. The motor for the large-scale tectonic movements here is the plate collision of Africa with Europe. In the process, the Adriatic spur -as part of Africa - pushes against the Alps, so that the mountains continue to grow. To the west of the spur rises the Dinaric Mountains, in which several large fault zones formed perpendicular to the plate boundary. The current earthquake manifested itself on one of these fault zones, which was probably the Mostar Fault.

1667 Earthquake: assumed Mw 7.0

There have been strong earthquakes in the region in the past, which have claimed the lives of many people. The earthquake of 1667, which occurred near the city centre of Dubrovnik and largely destroyed it, became sadly famous. About 10% of the population died, which amounted to a good 3000 people. There was a major fire and rockfalls. In addition, tsunamis were generated. It is assumed that the quake had a magnitude of 7.0.
