Specialist remark​


An earthquake swarm began yesterday evening located near the SW-ern tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula. The swarm began with an M3.9 earthquake and six other earthquakes with magnitude above 3.0 have been detected. Nearly 600 earthquakes have been detected since the swarm began. The swarm is still ongoing though the intensity of it has decreased. The IMO has received felt reports for the largest earthquakes from the Reykjanes peninsula and the Capital area. Last time an earthquake of similar magnitude was recorded in this area was in November 2021 when an M3.5 earthquake occurred there.

Week overview 4 April - 10 April​


Just under 600 earthquakes were detected by the IMO¿s SIL-seismic network last week, a similar number as the previus week when 630 earthquakes were located. All earthquakes on land were below a magnitude 3 and most of the activity was located in the Reykjanes peninsula where around 300 earthquakes were located, other activity was distributed in traditional locations. Twenty earthquakes were located around 150 km north of Iceland at Kolbeinsey ridge where the largest earthquakes were roughly a 3 in magnitude.

German Vulkane.net wrote more about the Sicilian Earthquake. My husband told me, that his ex-wife and friend, who lives in the city of Catania, woke up in the middle of the night (around 2.30-3.00) by that earthquake as the house was vibrating/shaking.

Seismically, there is a lot going on in and around Sicily: There was an earthquake Mb 4.5 off the east coast. At Etna, the seismicity increased a bit and there were further quakes on the Lipar island of Vulcano.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 occurred off the east coast of Sicily. The hypocentre was located at a depth of 10 km. The epicentre was located 51 km northeast of Syracuse. Catania is 69 km from the epicentre. It was a moderate tectonic quake and posed no danger to the population. There are 2 (now 15) perception reports at the EMSC. One person wrote that the earth tremor woke them up and got them out of bed. Another person reported that the quake was insignificant. So the shaking was perceived differently, although the detectors were similarly close to the epicentre.

The quake occurred at a subduction zone at the edge of the Ionian Basin. Here, the Ionian Plate dips below the Tyrrhenian Plate. The process is related to the collision of the continents of Africa and Europe, in the course of which several catastrophic earthquakes have already occurred on the coast of Sicily. The risk of strong earthquakes is latent in the region and is now no higher than usual, yet the earthquake is likely to have reminded people that they live in an earthquake zone.

The most severe earthquake disaster in Sicily occurred in 1908, when a magnitude 7.5 earthquake destroyed large parts of the port city of Messina. In terms of fatalities, it was even the most momentous natural disaster to occur in Europe in the 20th century. Depending on the source, there were between 72,000 and 110,00 victims.

However, the great Messina quake was not the only quake with catastrophic consequences. There are records of quakes in eastern Sicily in 1086 (Syracuse), 1137, 1169 and 1693 (Catania)** It is striking that the first 3 quakes were comparatively close together in time and space. It was probably an earthquake sequence.

Etna with slight increase in seismicity

Earthquake activity on Etna has been very low in recent weeks. In recent days, a slight increase in seismicity has been observed. The INGV's shakemap shows 19 weak tremors manifested in the last 10 days. The strongest had a magnitude of 1.7. In April, there were a total of 34 weak earthquakes on Etna. The tremors reflect the normal seismic activity of an active volcano and do not indicate an increase in volcanic activity.


Vulcano: Even more quakes

If you compare the earthquakes under Vulcano with those on Etna, you will find that the activity under Vulcano is almost twice as strong as under Etna. A total of 61 quakes were detected this month. Of these, 31 are currently shown on the earthquake map. Some of the quakes are located under the southern tip of the neighbouring island of Lipari. The quakes west of the southern tip of Lipari have disappeared from the map. I would be interested to know if ground uplift due to inflation is detected here. Since the beginning of the crisis on Vulcano, not so many earthquakes have been recorded as this month. It is also interesting to note that there have been numerous earthquakes east of the Lipari Islands in recent months.

They manifested themselves under the Tyrrhenian Sea, at a depth of more than 100 km. Partial melting takes place in this area of the asthenosphere, creating magmas. These are normal processes for a seismically and volcanically active region. They represent the activity of the underground, which sooner or later will most likely lead to a volcanic eruption on Vulcano. But so far, no one can say when it will happen. A volcanic eruption could happen within months, or even years. In between, there could also be a period of calm.

Deep earthquakes were discovered in the 1920s, but they remain a subject of contention today. The reason is simple: they aren't supposed to happen. Yet they account for more than 20 percent of all earthquakes.
Shallow earthquakes require solid rocks to occur, more specifically, cold, brittle rocks. Only these can store up elastic strain along a geologic fault, held in check by friction until the strain lets loose in a violent rupture.
The Earth gets hotter by about 1 degree C with every 100 meters of depth on average. Combine that with high pressure underground and it's clear that by about 50 kilometers down, on average the rocks should be too hot and squeezed too tight to crack and grind the way they do at the surface. Thus deep-focus quakes, those below 70 km, demand an explanation.
Subduction gives us a way around this. As the lithospheric plates making up Earth's outer shell interact, some are plunged downward into the underlying mantle. As they exit the plate-tectonic game they get a new name: slabs. At first, the slabs, rubbing against the overlying plate and bending under the stress, produce shallow-type subduction earthquakes. These are well explained. But as a slab goes deeper than 70 km, the shocks continue.
