Earthquakes around the world

Papau New Guinea got hit by a 5.1 earthquake like an hour ago.

We've had 2 earthquakes today thus far over 5 - Argentina / Chile and Papau New Guinea.

We've had too many over 4 - to many to write down here! I think Cuba was a 4.5 not over 6...

Also we've had a few volcanic eruptions today thus far, mostly in Japan and Russia.

The asteroid 1998 OR2 made its closest approach to earth earlier so wonder if we'll see an uptick of earthquakes / volcanoes today.

M5 in Iran, and a two M4s in the surrounding regions from USGS:

Another one just struck somewhere between Switzerland and Germany M4.5
I am not sure when or whether this happened. It does not appear to have happened today. I checked the Swiss, the German, the European seismological sites apart from USGS and none of them have anything about it. Neither does the Swiss newspapers and I also didn't feel it, living 75km from the supposed place ;)
So either it is yet to be officially registered or yet to happen :wow: or ???

The sites which I checked are:
The Swiss site is SED | Last 90 Days
The German site is Aktuelle Erdbeben in Deutschland | Erdbebennews
The European site is Earthquakes - Earthquake today - Latest Earthquakes in the World - EMSC
And the USGS site is Earthquakes

Interesting, I can see that this is missing from the USGS site...

Here's my source

Maybe it wasn't an earthquake but something else?

Yes, they say that it has not yet been confirmed by a specialist, so perhaps that is the issue or perhaps it was something else as you suggests which triggered the sensors. A false positive like with the corona virus perhaps?

Yes, it looks like something may have triggered the sensors but that something was not an earthquake otherwise the other sites would be showing it.

@Aeneas out of curiosity I've searched for information on the region St Gallen and interestingly in 2013 there was a human induced earthquake of M3 from activities related to geothermal energy

Deep geothermal systems provide a sustainable, renewable, zero-carbon source of power and are consistent with the Swiss government’s 2050 energy strategy and its pledge to go carbon-neutral. Yet the technology used in Switzerland, known as Enhanced Geothermal Stimulation (EGS), has faced setbacks after triggering earthquakes in Basel in 2006 and in St. Gallen in 2013.

Also see the below as the event in 2013 led to the closure of the facility. It looks like the facility is now used for EU funded research (don't know what)

Anywhose, that's the closest thing I can find to explain the anomaly of the sensors being triggered today!

Last week saw 1 out of 75 earthquakes equal or greater to 4.5 in the map area. Biggest worldwide were 2 of 6.3, one in Japan and one in PNG.
2199 out of 2680 of all earthquakes fell in the map area.
Percentage: 82.1%
This week saw 1 out of 69 earthquakes equal or greater to 4.5 in the map area. The biggest worldwide was a 6.6 in Greece.
1876 out of 2418 worldwide fell in the area as seen below. A reminder, that this is only according to USGS.
Percentage: 77.6%
