Putin Recognizes Donbass Republics, Sends Russian Military to 'Denazify' Ukraine

Interestingly enough, at least some scientific publications are not as quick to jump on the "shunning Russia" wagon. This is actually surprising. This is a letter that was sent to the Russian editor of "Elsevier".

Yes, good for them. But it is also crazy that they had to send that letter at all - even though they didn't have to react to any sanction or law, because there is none at this moment! It's like they are saying "look guys, there is an insane witch hunt going on and they will try to bully every Russian, they might even punish random Russian scientists for no reason, but rest assured that we will try our best to avoid that." Notice also that they said that Russians might not share the views of their government, as if that has anything to do with science or can ever be a reason to censor science!

It is just so crazy, here in Germany the mayor of Munich forced the conductor Gergiev to "condemn Putin and the war", or be fired. And since he didn't comply, he was fired. There were more examples of this dynamic that I can't remember now. This is so totalitarian it boggles the mind.

Munich mayor Dieter Reiter issued an ultimatum, saying Gergiev would be dismissed if he failed to condemn Putin's actions by Monday.
After the deadline passed, Reiter terminated the musician's contract.
"With immediate effect, there will be no further concerts by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under his direction," said the mayor in a statement.
Gergiev's failure to denounce the invasion of Ukraine has left his career in tatters.

Over the weekend, the conductor was dropped by his management, dismissed from major festivals and had several upcoming concerts cancelled. On Monday, the Edinburgh International Festival - of which he was honorary president - asked for, and accepted, his resignation.

I've been paying particular attention to the opinions of people in my circles who I know were asking questions about the COVID narrative to see if they are also asking questions about this situation. I'm sad to report that most of them seem to be accepting the official narrative 100%. The biggest thing I am hearing today is that Biden isn't doing enough because he didn't restart the keystone pipeline and he's still buying oil from Russia and "supporting Putin's warmachine".

I said "how can you believe what the media is telling you about this after two years of lies about COVID? Don't you think they could be lying about this too?" One of them said "but I can see images of the war on the TV" and I pointed out that we are in the fog of war and things will be clearer in a few weeks. Both of the people I tried this tact with seemed to take it on board, so that was encouraging.

Getting this as entering RT. I'm in Romania. Was not like this yesterday.

Well, that reminds me of the old video from 2014 in which members of the Azov battalion literally crucify a Russian soldier while he screams in a choked way due to his covered mouth, to finally burn him alive... there is also a current video in which They would be preventing the exit of civilians a couple of days ago.
Russian troops have also reported that they are going 2,870 Ukrainian troops killed, 3,700 injured, 572 taken prisoner

Mar. 1, 2022- Mexico declines to join Russia sanctions

President Lopez Obrador says his country won’t take part in trying to punish Moscow over its attack on Ukraine

Mexico won’t be taking part in the international pile-on to sanction Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, as President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said he seeks to keep his country on peaceful terms with all nations.

“We are not going to take any sort of economic retaliation because we want to maintain good relations with all the governments of the world,” Lopez Obrador told reporters on Tuesday. He added that remaining neutral will put Mexico in a position to “talk with the parties in conflict.”

The Mexican leader’s position on the Ukraine crisis marks a novel diplomatic strategy as other nations around the world – including former Warsaw Pact nations such as Bulgaria and Romania – join the US in trying to punish Russia. Choosing neutrality could strain Mexico’s close relationship with Washington, but Lopez Obrador has been critical of US foreign policy.

Even as it tries to avoid alienating its dominant trading partner, the US, Mexico also aims to maintain economic ties with Russia and Moscow’s Latin American allies. Russia’s Lukoil this year bought into an offshore oil project in Mexico, and Lopez Obrador said on Monday that his country will keep its airspace open for Aeroflot’s flights to Mexico City.

Mexican Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco was widely criticized this week for posting a Twitter message offering “warm greetings” to Aeroflot and noting that “tourism is synonymous with peace, friendship and understanding between peoples.” He added that Russian tourist visits to Mexico more than doubled last year to over 75,000.

Lopez Obrador criticized censorship of Russian media outlets, including RT, by governments and social media companies. “I don’t agree with the fact that media from Russia or any country is censored,” he said.

Mar. 1, 2022- Venezuela’s Maduro gives his take on Russia-Ukraine conflict

In call with Putin, Venezuela’s president has condemned the destabilizing activities of US and NATO

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused US and NATO countries of destabilizing Eastern Europe and launching a campaign of lies and disinformation regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Maduro made his comments on Tuesday in a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a Kremlin readout of their conversation. Putin shared his assessment of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, emphasizing that Moscow’s goal is to protect civilians in the Donbass region and secure Kiev’s recognition of the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (LPR) People’s Republics, as well as Russian sovereignty over Crimea.

Putin said Russia aims to “demilitarize and denazify” Ukraine’s government, reiterating a key point made when he announced the military operation last week. Moscow also seeks to ensure that Kiev won’t join NATO or obtain nuclear weapons.

Maduro praised Russia’s “decisive actions” and emphasized the importance of countering disinformation on the Ukraine crisis. Western leaders and media outlets have accused Russia of trying to swallow up Ukraine by starting an “unnecessary” fight. Some of the imagery being posted online and purporting to show the current conflict was circulating on the internet years ago.

The Venezuelan president called for strengthening his country’s strategic partnership with Russia and pushing forward with joint projects. The two leaders agreed to continue making contacts and exchanging delegations at various levels of their governments.

Mar. 2, 2022- China to continue trade relations with Russia

Beijing will keep importing Russian natural gas while opposing international sanctions

China will maintain normal trade relations with Russia despite international sanctions, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday during a regular press conference.

“China and Russia will continue to carry out normal trade cooperation following the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit,” he said.

According to the spokesman, China’s position was to oppose any “illegally imposed” unilateral sanctions, believing that “sanctions are not an effective solution to solve problems.”

The Tuesday statement repeats the ones made during a press conference on Monday. Answering a question from a Reuters journalist about China buying energy and other commodities from Russia after the recent sanctions, Wang Wenbin said the two countries were to “continue to conduct normal trade cooperation,” according to the official transcript.

During that press conference, the spokesman also stated that China’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine had not changed. Replying to a question about humanitarian aid, he said China was “ready to play a constructive role in easing the situation in Ukraine.”

Speaking on Monday at an emergency UN session, China’s permanent representative Zhang Jun said that it’s possible to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through direct dialogue and negotiations.

Earlier in 2022 Russian president Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping issued a joint declaration calling for a halt to NATO expansion, which Moscow was opposed to and has tried to mitigate through obtaining security guarantees from the US-led military bloc.

Russia launched an attack on Ukraine last Thursday, claiming it had to use force to stop Ukrainian attacks against the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, and to demilitarize and “denazify” the country.Kiev and Western countries condemned Russia for committing an act of unprovoked aggression. Western sanctions imposed against Moscow in retaliation are intended to seriously impact Russia’s economy.

Mar. 2, 2022- Russia sanctions could backfire on EU economy – European Commission

The bloc’s economic growth and energy supplies are likely to be negatively affected

The war in Ukraine and the ensuing sanctions against Russia could harm Europe’s energy supplies and stall its economic growth, European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni warned on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, he said Europe may encounter problems in the supply of energy resources – more precisely, the supply of Russian gas – and needs to be ready for such an outcome.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will likely impact growth negatively, including through repercussions on financial markets, further energy price pressures, more persistent supply chain bottlenecks, and confidence effects that we should not under-evaluate,” Gentiloni added.

His statement comes after the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat, reported on Wednesday that inflation within the bloc had soared to a new high of 5.8% in February.

Earlier, the European Commission also issued a statement outlining the negative impact of anti-Russian sanctions on the economic situation of member states.

Russia is the EU’s largest supplier of energy resources, meeting some 40% of its natural gas demand and supplying nearly a third of its crude oil imports. Its oil and gas industries have not yet been added to the sanctions list, but on March 1, members of the European Parliament approved a resolution condemning its military offensive in Ukraine. They called for tougher sanctions, including limiting oil and gas imports and completely cutting the country off from the SWIFT international system of inter-bank payments.

Mar. 2, 2022- Europe ‘not at war with Russia’ – EU diplomacy chief

Brussels supports the attacked and will do everything possible to stop the aggression, Josep Borell says

The European Union is not at war with Russia but supported Ukraine, Josep Borell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, said on Tuesday night, while speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena SER.

We are not at war with Russia, but we are on the side of the attacked. Between the attacked and the aggressor there cannot be a middle point of view, you have to take sides.” He added that the progressive thing was “to condemn, repudiate and do everything possible to stop an armed aggression against a neighboring country.

According to Borell, Europe had to send aid collectively, responding to the needs and demands of the Ukrainian people, and that all the countries have already “approved financing and [contributions],” adding that the shipments risk being attacked by Russian forces “in the logic of war.”

Regarding the risks of possible escalation to a nuclear war, he claimed it was “enormously irresponsible to talk” about this topic.
The chief of European diplomacy also assured his audience that creating a European army was not on the immediate agenda, but that he’d asked national armies to coordinate better and has called for increased defense spending in the EU countries.
About sanctions imposed by the US, European countries, Canada and allies, Borell supported their necessity but warned of their possible consequences.

Sanctions are made to damage the economy of the sanctioned country, but they also hurt you in return and we have to be willing to pay a price,” he claimed.

Russian troops were sent into Ukraine last week as part of a special operation to demilitarize and “denazify” the country and in order to protect Donetsk and Lugansk breakaway regions, as well as Russia’s national-security interests. Kiev has accused Moscow of an unprovoked offensive, and Europe, the US and other countries have responded with unprecedented sanctions, targeting Russia’s economy and a select list of high-ranking officials.

Mar. 2, 2022- Russia reveals number of killed and injured troops in Ukraine

Nearly 500 of its soldiers have died amid the offensive in Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry revealed

Some 498 servicemen have been killed and nearly 1,600 have been wounded during the ongoing attack on Ukraine, Russia’s military claimed on Wednesday.

The Defense Ministry refuted claims that there have been “countless” casualties during the conflict to date, branding them deliberate disinformation originating from the adversary.

According to Russian military estimates, Ukrainian army units and far-right paramilitaries have reportedly lost at least 2,870 soldiers, while a further 3,700 have received various wounds. Some 572 Ukrainian servicemen were taken prisoner, the ministry added.

Mar. 2, 2022- Spain U-turns on supplying offensive weapons to Ukraine

Madrid follows Berlin in reversing course and deciding to send arms

Spain is to join several other EU nations and send offensive weapons to Ukraine amid the Russian invasion, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday, breaking with his earlier statements. Previously, Madrid had contributed only defensive supplies.

“I announce that Spain will deliver offensive military material to the Ukrainian resistance,” Sanchez told the Spanish parliament. He didn’t specify the types of weaponry it would provide.

“To a European threat, we must give a European – coordinated and united – response,” the PM said, explaining his decision.

The move was also a response to his critics, who had questioned his government’s commitment to the Ukrainian people, he added.

As recent as Monday, Sanchez had assured state-run broadcaster TVE that Spain would not be sending offensive weapons direct to Ukraine. He said his country would instead offer assistance through the European Peace Facility, which had earlier decided to allocate €500 million to arming Kiev. As of last week, Madrid had supplied 20 tons of protective military gear and humanitarian aid.

Spain had initially planned only to supply defensive weapons to Ukraine, but even this idea was vigorously opposed by the left-wing United We Can group, which is a minority partner in the coalition government.

A similar U-turn had already been enacted in Germany. Despite previously ruling out the delivery of lethal arms to Kiev, Berlin has since provided it with anti-tank missiles and Stinger air defense systems.

More than a dozen countries have now supplied some form of military aid to Ukraine. They include the US, the UK, and Canada, as well as several EU member states, among them France, Portugal, Belgium, and the Czech Republic.

Russian troops were sent into Ukraine last Thursday as part of what the Kremlin called a “special operation” to demilitarize and “denazify” the Ukraine government, which it said was responsible for “genocide” in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk. Kiev has described the actions by Moscow as an unprovoked invasion, and urged the West to increase its sanctions on Russia.

Mar. 2, 2022- Meta blocks all apps of Russia’s Ria and Sputnik outlets

The media’s parent company denounced the platform’s move as “censorship”

Meta has blocked all the apps of Russia’s Ria and Sputnik news outlets, along with several others, according to government media holding Rossiya Segodnya, which incorporates all the said outlets.

On Wednesday,
Rossiya Segodnya issued a press release, saying that Meta overnight shut off the apps of all the outlets” belonging to the holding. The statement went on to condemn the tech giant’s action as “censorship.

Meta’s decision coincided with the latest measures taken by Google, which saw Rossiya Segodnya’s material and content restricted on Google Discover and Google News. The media holding described the move as “information manipulation.

Since February 24, when Russia invaded Ukraine, a number of Moscow’s state-owned and state-affiliated media outlets have been taken off air or blocked on the internet by a whole host of countries, including the EU, Australia and Canada. The decisions were made either by authorities or privately-owned social media platforms and TV networks.

On Tuesday, Meta blocked accounts belonging to RT and Sputnik on Facebook and Instagram in the European Union, describing them as a “propaganda arm” of the Kremlin. TikTok has followed suit.

Russian authorities have demanded that Meta restore access to the blocked accounts because the ban runs counter to the basic principles of freedom of expression.

Over the past week, the US, Canada, the UK, the EU and Japan have placed unprecedented sanctions on Russia targeting, among other things, its central bank’s assets, major commercial banks and the country’s leadership. Over 35 countries to date have also closed their airspace to Russian planes. The punitive measures came in response to Moscow launching a military offensive against Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin claimed that the “special military operation” was intended to “demilitarize and denazify” the neighboring country, as well as to protect the Russian-speaking people of the Donbass. Ukraine and the West are accusing Moscow of waging an aggressive and “unprovoked” war against a sovereign state, and suspect that Putin is seeking to install a pro-Russian administration in Kiev.

Mar. 2, 2022- EU bans broadcasts by RT, Sputnik

The Russian outlets have been barred from airing in Europe from Wednesday

The European Council announced a decision on Wednesday to ban all broadcasting activities by RT and Sputnik in its jurisdiction. It accused the channels of spreading disinformation to their audiences.

The ban will remain in place “until the aggression to Ukraine is put to an end, and until the Russian Federation and its associated outlets cease to conduct disinformation and information manipulation actions against the EU and its member states,” the statement said.

Brussels claimed that the two news organizations were “essential and instrumental” in “bringing forward and supporting” the Russian military offensive in Ukraine. It further claimed they were part of a “systematic, international campaign of disinformation, information manipulation, and distortion of facts” aimed at destabilizing Russia’s neighbors and EU members.

RT’s deputy editor-in-chief Anna Belkina condemned the decision and said critics of the outlet had not “pointed to a single example, a single grain of evidence that what RT has reported over these days, and continues to report, is not true.”

Moscow for years has said that Western nations were trying to suppress Russian media through various restrictions. Some EU members imposed outright bans on RT and Sputnik long before the Russian invasion of Ukraine started.

US-based tech giants previously imposed their own restrictions against Russian media. YouTube and Facebook made their content inaccessible on their platforms in Europe, while Apple and Google banned their apps from their stores for European users. In Apple’s case, the official store is the only way to install apps on devices.

Ofcom, the British media regulator, is currently investigating RT after the British government strongly implied that the outlet should be banned in the country.

Mar. 2, 2022- Russia restricts liberal media outlets

The move has been strongly criticized by the well-known Russian journalist Alexey Venediktov

Russia has demanded the country’s media regulator pull two popular liberal press outlets off the air due to their coverage of Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, the General Prosecutor’s office ordered Roskomnadzor to restrict access to the Echo of Moscow’s Radio Station and TV-channel Rain for their alleged spread of false information in relation to the actions of Russia’s armed forces in the Eastern European nation.

Television channel Rain, known as Dozhd in Russian, has been designated as a foreign agent due to its links to overseas funding. Echo of Moscow is indirectly state-owned by the Gazprom media conglomerate.

The General Prosecutor’s office also accused the two agencies of calling for violence against Russian citizens, as well as encouraging violations of public order by urging participation in mass demonstrations against the military action.

Echo’s editor-in-chief, the well-known liberal journalist Alexey Venediktov,
hit out at the decision, arguing that “these claims are not supported by any examples or evidence.” He insisted that “they are groundless and offensive to journalists and Russian citizens.”

Venediktov also promised to challenge the order in court. “We see a political component [in this], as well as the introduction of censorship, which is directly prohibited by the Constitution of the Russian Federation,” he said.

The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists criticized the measures against the outlets, arguing that
“Russian authorities should allow Echo of Moscow, Dozhd TV, and all other news outlets to work freely, and should refrain from restricting access to social media platforms.”

The organization, however, did not condemn the ban of other Russian media, namely RT and Sputnik, in the EU earlier this week. Brussels claimed that these two outlets are state-sponsored propaganda and promised measures to limit their access across the bloc.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the offensive into Ukraine last Thursday after the leaders of the recently recognized breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics appealed for assistance in relation to what they claim was increasing “aggression” from Kiev’s armed forces.

Sorry for being a selfish (and lazy) person, but does anybody know where it is stated that NATO would honor the agreement not to move east after the collapse of the Soviet Union? Is there an article or some such?

Yes there is. Those two articles, for example, unfortunately in german:

That promise was given in that year 1990. Here is the translation:

The former German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher said on 2 February 1990 after a meeting with the then US Secretary of State James Baker: "We agreed that there is no intention to extend the NATO defence area to the East. This applies not only to the GDR, but generally.

What Genscher said there, standing beside US Secretary of State James Baker, was also caught on camera:

Thanks!! I had a "discussion" with a german colleague, who was fully "matrixed" and he said that the whole promise was a (Russian) lie. I will send it to him tomorrow. He will at least cannot say he didn't understand it, since it is in German ;-)

This was all over Russian news today:

Mykolayiv region governor: Russians are trying to avoid civilian casualties

The governor of Mykolayiv Region, Vitaliy Kim, has said that "the Russians do not want to shoot at civilians" and are trying to lure the Ukrainian military out of populated areas using special tactics.

"I believe that the Russians do not want to shoot civilians and are afraid to go into towns. This is what has been happening for the previous three days or two: they go in a column, go to the town, stop and go back - lure them out," he said, adding that the Russian military had left in the direction of Snigirevka.

On Sunday, Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov reported that US advisers had taught Ukraine's military leadership to deploy rocket-propelled artillery in residential areas to use civilians as "human shields". [...]

It must be Russian propaganda and V. Kim clearly is a Russophile, right? Let's see one of his other messages:

Mykolaiv. Information as of 14:30, 2nd of March

Good afternoon! WE'RE FROM UKRAINE!

The orcs are on the move. Our job is to stop them.
They, unlike us, are not oriented in our area.

I call on those who can and know. At night, when you see a column, we burn them!
If you know the coordinates, then send us a photo with the coordinates. But only through officials.
I urge everyone to get involved.

Let's light this night!

I appeal to my fellow hunters.

I give you a tip. Go out, take off the muffler (about a muffler I was wrong), one shot and look how they all ran away.

Tested - it works.

Dont know if the video has been already uploaded but at 2 -3 sec we can see a bomb fall. From what I found its probably a drone. Funny enough I looked up and very quickly I found on youtube

Thats recent turkish drone given to ukraine and thats not all. The bomb used is air to ground.

I searched for several russian drones and I found the most recent applied in russian military was tested in Syria. It has both been tested air to air which is more a propulsion rocket. Air to ground is more like a bomb being drop like you can see in the videos.

"Orion" reconnaissance and attack drone

The funniest part is that I cant find any info on drone action from russian side. Youtube by coincidence is full of ukraine latest drone blowing up convoys and like that. Coincidence maybe who knows.

All these attempts to punish or coerce Russia, is only making us smaller. These tactics of sanctions might work on small countries, but a power like Russia, you only place limitations, and thus these coercive actions are reflected back on the ones who make them.

We live in a networked world and social power grants us the ability to work for the best solutions. But if you are tyrannical, the best solution is to intimidate and stifle social power. So, that's why the propaganda has escalated, because for lack of a means to obliterate Russia, that is all you have to work with. And this alone - Russia's ability to stand up against the West - who's policy is to destroy those who don't fall in line - creates a reaction that causes a collapse in the light that - up till now - no one could withstand U.S. aggression, and in face of this, they self destruct by closing itself off.

That speech, where Biden said nothing in regard to a question.... He could have acted presidential and made gestures and set a diplomatic tone - things that leaders do in times like this. But he said nothing. Because he shut himself off. No social engagement.
