Potential Food and Energy Shortage Across the World

Last Updated: May 27, 2022 at 7:28 a.m. ET
The world has changed so much since 1985. The price of Costco Wholesale’s hot dog-and-soda special — $1.50 — has remained constant.

That $1.50 price tag indexed for inflation would be $4.11 by now. CEO Craig Jelinek famously noticed how much the warehouse-club retailer was losing on the special, and broached the idea of hiking the price to co-founder Jim Sinegal, who threatened to kill him if he did. As Jelinek is still alive, one can deduce the current price.

From the archives (October 2011): CEOs who think like Steve Jobs

But an internet rumor surfaced a few weeks ago indicating that even Costco was now succumbing to inflationary pressure. Costco denied it then, and, on Thursday’s night’s earnings conference call, it denied it once more.

“I want to address some incorrect information floating around on social media and a few other media outlets claiming that we have increased the price of our $1.50 hot-dog-and-soda combinations sold in our food courts,” its senior vice president for investor relations and treasury, Robert Nelson, told analysts.

“Let me just say the price, when we introduced the hot-dog-soda combo in the mid-’80s, was $1.50. The price today is $1.50, and we have no plans to increase the price at this time.”

If you like croissants, however, well, too bad.

“As you know, we’re not the first one to go up when we have higher costs. I think just recently, it may have been after the end of the quarter, reluctantly, we took up the price of our muffins and our croissants, I think, $1 as the price of a lot of those raw materials have continued to escalate to 2x and 3x and 4x what they were last year,” he said.

Costco COST, +1.24% met earnings expectations for its third quarter but fell short of same-store-sales estimates.

Nelson did note that, historically, Costco has raised membership prices every five to six years, and the last hike was in June 2017. “Given the current macro environment, the historically high inflation and the burden it’s having on our members and all consumers in general, we think increasing our membership fee today ahead of our typical timing is not the right time,” he said.

Scot Ciccarelli, an analyst at Truist Securities, said in a research note that he expects a special dividend in the next few quarters and a membership-fee increase “eventually.”

Great...just what we needed.

Fuel…Food…, and now Water.

Kamala Harris and Samantha Power (administrator of USAID) and others announce at a press conference that water is now a national security threat. And Gov. agencies will be taking a position on protecting us. To increase water-climate-and national security. The DOD, USAID and others will be joining. AND…America will lead this fight internationally for global water security.

(If I remember correctly California, after achieving several years of water stored in its reservoirs, then last year proceeded to dump it all out in an effort save a minnow type fish? Kamal is from California)

Here is the press conference video:

Venezuela seems to be doing well, in terms of both food, inflation, social cohesion, and energy. US sanctions seem to be having the opposite effect of what was intended.

The world has been stunned by a double wonder: Bolivarian Venezuela’s political survival and its miraculous economic recovery: the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean has reported that it expects the Venezuelan economy to grow for the first time since 2014, by 5 percent, one of the highest in the region.

Venezuela’s rate of inflation has come down from something like 10 million percent, as reported by CNBC in 2019, and described as the “biggest economic disaster in modern history” by the Washington Post in the same year, to 7.1 percent in September 2021 and to an incredible 1.4 percent in March 2022.

The March 2022 issue of the PSUV magazine Economia Politica y Revolucion reports that corn production, essential for arepas — Venezuela’s staple food — has increased by 60 percent, rice 17 percent, with an increase in non-oil exports of 76 percent.

These developments are coupled with a strong export performance not only of oil, a sturdy revival of domestic consumption levels, an abundance of the supply of all basic necessities, a rise in the population’s standards of living, and gradual and robust reconnection with the world economy
— excepting the U.S. — and a successful battle against the Covid-19 pandemic with one of the best performances in the region and the world — 5,716 deaths, that is, 20.1 per 100,000 inhabitants compared with 304.18 per 100,000 in the US.

All this within the context of the vicious U.S. blockade involving over 600 nasty unilateral economic measures. Though Venezuela’s economy is recovering, it is still suffering from the consequences of U.S. aggression since it still needs to address and reverse all the distortions caused by U.S. sanctions.

President Nicolas Maduro’s confidence in Venezuela’s economic recovery is such that he took the decisions to condone the $70 million debt to St Vincent and the Grenadines, reduce half the size of the debt of other member countries of the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean (OCES), and restarted the agreement with the countries affiliated to PetroCaribe with a 35 percent discount in the price of oil.

To reduce this simply to economic confidence, however, would be misplaced since it is driven by Venezuela’s revolutionary solidarity, inspired by Hugo Chavez’s political and ethical vision whose tradition President Maduro, leading the PSUV and the Bolivarian revolution, has maintained.

None of the above would have been possible without the solid support of the people of Venezuela, especially its productive sectors, namely workers and peasants — not as atomized masses supporting the government in resisting imperialist aggression, but as conscious and active citizens organized in their class institutions.

The resistance to imperialist aggression has strengthened the relationship of the mass organizations of the people (trade unions, peasant bodies, communitarian organizations, women, youth, and so forth) with the PSUV.

The party’s authority has immensely increased while simultaneously that of the right-wing parties, especially Juan Gauido’s wing, has massively weakened. At the December 2021 regional and municipal elections, the PSUV and its allies scored a sweeping victory by winning 20 out of 23 governorships and 213 mayoralties to 120 to various right-wing oppositions.

Thus, it beggars belief that preposterous and utterly false charges have been made accusing Maduro of leading a right-wing-leaning government. The Anti-Blockade Law (October 2020) and the Law of Special Economic Zones (April 2021) have been used as a battering ram to depict President Maduro as neoliberal.

Similar charges have been leveled against the government of Cuba for setting up the special economic zone in Mariel, but also against President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua for his strategy of the popular economy, depicted as a “brand of neoliberal developmentalism.”

Evo Morales also suffered similar criticisms as being committed to a neoliberal program based on “fiscal austerity, low inflationary growth, inconsequential agrarian reform, low social spending, and alliances with transnational capital.”

The Anti-Blockade Law and the Law of Special Economic Zones stipulate the participation of private capital in the unavoidable readjustment of the productive apparatus, required to bring about the desperately needed economic recovery.

In the context of Venezuela’s economy having lost 99 percent of its revenues because of U.S. sanctions, it makes economic sense to draw and harness existing sources of capital, always under the aegis of the Bolivarian state, to generate productive activity, sources of employment, and value added, all aimed at improving the population’s living standards.

However, the positive results mentioned above ought not to be exclusively attributed to these special economic laws, but, more importantly, neither the Bolivarian government, President Maduro, nor the PSUV at any point since the death of Hugo Chavez, have abandoned their commitment to social justice as a central ethical tenet that guides their politics and actions. In fact, quite the opposite is the case.

Imperialist-driven isolation aimed at the economic collapse of socialist revolutions is an axiomatic fact of history. Lenin himself was compelled to adopt the New Economic Policy caused by the catastrophic situation brought about by the economic, political, and military aggression of 14 imperialist countries between 1918-21.

I don't know much about this author, nor about this period in Soviet history, but his claims about the USSR seems to be well short of the whole banana. I get the sense that there was a lot more going on than just externally-imposed imperialist aggression to have caused the upheaval of the time.

As a consequence of imperialist aggression, by 1921 the USSR faced famine, huge food queues in cities caused by acute shortages, a severe decline in energy supplies, multiple peasant revolts, military mutinies, strikes, hyperinflation, black market racketeering, and the collapse of the value of the rouble. With all the contextual historic, political, and economic limitations of the comparison, Venezuela — subjected to sustained U.S. economic warfare — has confronted a similar situation of potential collapse.

At any rate, no truly neoliberal policies anywhere in the world, from the U.S. to Sri Lanka, implemented as an emergency package to deal with a severe economic crisis have ever produced an improvement in any country’s economic performance, rise in the standards of living, expansion of the self-organization of the mass of the people (workers, peasants, women, youth, pensioners, and the poor in general) and greater political support for the government that implemented them.

This is obvious to even the most superficial observers of current affairs in Latin America who find it difficult to deny that it is neoliberal policies that lie at the heart of the catastrophic failure of domestic oligarchies in Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Honduras, Mexico, Argentina to consolidate their rule, a malaise that is currently hitting the narco-state of Colombia and fascist President Bolsonaro in Brazil hard.
Joe Biden’s desperation to obtain extra sources of oil supplies led him to send a U.S. delegation to talk directly to President Maduro — a government the U.S. does not recognize — on at least two occasions, which have resulted in a stronger reassertion of Venezuela’s national sovereignty and a massive vindication of Maduro’s legitimacy.

Thus far these peculiar encounters have produced a very mild easing of U.S. sanctions but a strengthening of Caracas’s demand for the full lifting of all sanctions and a formal recognition of President Maduros’ democratically elected government.

Contrast this with Europe’s abject submissiveness to Washington’s diktats. Nevertheless, Washington remains committed to “regime change” in Venezuela and continues to recognize the obsolete 2015-elected National Assembly and Guaido as “the interim President of Venezuela” — both confirmed in an official State Department statement as recently as May this year.

With the strong economic recovery presided over and led by President Maduro’s government and the PSUV, the revolution has entered a phase of deepening the transition from a rentier, oil-export-based economy, to economic diversification and import-substitution, aimed at continuing the socialist transformation of the state, society, and economy.

All these objectives were reaffirmed at the PSUV’s fifth national congress, held with a vibrant atmosphere in March to coincide with the ninth anniversary of Chavez’s death.

In case there is any remaining doubt about the socialist direction of Bolivarian Venezuela, there are well over four million citizens organized in the people’s militia to assuage anybody’s misgivings.

Turkey, Russia Agree To De-Mining Operation In Ukrainian Ports To Erect 'Grain Corridor'

"Russia has reportedly reached an agreement with Turkey to erect a de-mined 'grain corridor' which would provide safe passage to Ukrainian grain cargo ships out of the Black Sea port of Odessa via joint military escorts."
"In the territorial waters of the neighboring country, Turkish military forces will take over the demining and they will also escort the ships as far as neutral waters," Monday's report said. Russian warships would then escort the vessels carrying grain to the Bosporus."
"Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov previously told reporters the following in recent a press conference, according to Yahoo News citing regional sources: A conversation (between the Russian President Vladimir Putin) and President Erdoğan has resulted in an agreement that our Turkish colleagues will try to help to organize the demining of Ukrainian seaports in order to release ships which were technically taken hostage together with cargo needed in developing countries."
.....
"It's as yet unclear if the Ukrainian side has actually signed onto the reported deal, or whether it was involved in negotiating or possibly had its interests represented by Turkey in any way."
.....
"This agreement which is being reported from the Russian side appears to have taken place outside of UN channels, and it's uncertain how it will be received in the West."

The record inflation we are experiencing in 2022 is multi-factorial: weather, supply chain disruption, corporate greed, after-pandemic demand rebound... But one factor we should not forget is the printing of trillions of dollar by the FED over the past years.

Food related news is back "on our families" again recently. Even my little local newspaper had an article on food shortages this morning.

A few recent articles thanks to Ice Age Farmer and Corey's Digs:

BlackRock and Vanguard are taking over centralized food production technologies and will have near-total control over the future food supply in America

“The top three shareholders of CD Industries Holdings, the world’s largest fertilizer company, include both BlackRock and Vanguard. BlackRock and Vanguard are also the top shareholders in Union Pacific, the railroad giant that moves fertilizer and other agriculture inputs all across the country. The world’s top 10 food companies are also largely owned by both BlackRock and Vanguard. These include Nestlé, PepsiCo, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Associated British Foods, Mondel?z, Mars, Danone, Unilever, and Coca-Cola.”

BlackRock and Vanguard are also top shareholders in AppHarvest (a Kentucky-based agriculture company that boasts one of the biggest greenhouses in the world at 2.76 million square feet on 60 acres) and Hydrofarm Holdings (based in Pennsylvania, which grows crops in a controlled environment with vertical farming technology).

“What happens when they control all of the seeds, produce, and meat too?” asks Corey’s Digs.

Fake Meat, Fake Breastmilk and Food Shortages
By Dr. Joseph Mercola

In June 2020, Bill Gates announced startup company BIOMILQ, which is using biotechnology to create lab-made human milk for babies.
In “The Politics of Protein,” a report from the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food), Howard explains:

“Nearly every large meat and dairy processor/manufacturer has also acquired or developed plant-based meat and dairy substitutes, establishing footholds in a market that is growing approximately 20% per year.

More than a dozen of these firms have also invested in start-ups that are attempting to commercialize lab-grown meat and fish. Meanwhile, Vanguard and BlackRock — two of the world’s biggest asset management firms — have investments in almost all the largest meat, dairy, and animal feed companies.”

In the foreword to Navdanya International’s report “False Solutions That Endanger Our Health and Damage the Planet,” Vandana Shiva details how lab-grown foods are catastrophic for human health and the environment, as they are repeating the mistakes already made with industrial agriculture:

“In response to the crises in our food system, we are witnessing the rise of technological solutions that aim to replace animal products and other food staples with lab-grown alternatives. Artificial food advocates are reiterating the old and failed rhetoric that industrial agriculture is essential to feed the world.

Real, nutrient-rich food is gradually disappearing, while the dominant industrial agricultural model is causing an increase in chronic diseases and exacerbating climate change. The notion that high-tech, “farm free” lab food is a viable solution to the food crisis is simply a continuation of the same mechanistic mindset which has brought us to where we are today — the idea that we are separate from and outside of nature.

Industrial food systems have reduced food to a commodity, to “stuff” that can then be constituted in the lab. In the process, both the planet’s health and our health have been nearly destroyed.”

Government green-lights the development of 'gene edited' crops and livestock in the UK - and says they will be sold UNLABELLED in supermarkets

Under previous European rules, gene editing of livestock and plants was banned along with genetically modified (GM) produce — dubbed 'Frankenfood'. [But now….] 'Outside the EU we are free to follow the science,' said Environment Secretary George Eustice. The new Genetic Technology Bill, due to be introduced to Parliament today …… will also allow these gene-edited products to be sold without being labelled. Shoppers will be unable to tell if they are eating 'gene-edited' foods as part of new government plans to speed up the development of crops and livestock with altered DNA.

Climate TRACE: A Framework for ESG Initiatives and Social & Climate Credit System

At COP26, Al Gore elaborated on the function of this Climate TRACE coalition to hold entities and individuals accountable for climate offenses, stating, “We can now accurately determine where the greenhouse gas emissions are coming from…and we’ll have the identities of the people who are responsible for each of those greenhouse gas emission stream and if investors, or governments, or civil society activists want to hold them responsible, they will have the information upon which to base their action in holding them responsible.

WEF’s “Invest in Forests” Exposed: Global Surveillance Grid (Video)

The WEF’s “Investing in Forests” program sounds great …….. But behind its philanthropic appeal lies a global surveillance grid, monitoring all activity on the planet — just as prescribed by Agenda 2030 and their 4th Industrial Revolution. Christian shares an unreleased document and reveals the truth in this special Ice Age Farmer broadcast.

Another food processing plant went up in flames. According to local news Stevens Point Journal, a fire ripped through a pizza-making plant in Wisconsin on Monday.

More than 70 firefighters from multiple fire departments battled a massive fire at Festive Foods in eastern Portage County that began around 0900 local time. The American Red Cross arrived on the scene shortly after to provide food and water to firefighters. They snapped two pictures of the blaze, showing flames erupting from the facility's roof and a column of thick dark smoke pouring into the air.

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in the early evening, and damage to the food processing plant has yet to be fully assessed. However, Festive Foods' Facebook page indicates the plant is "temporarily closed."

"Today festive foods experienced a heartbreaking event. As many of you have seen in the news we have had a terrible fire run through our plant," a post on Festive Foods' Facebook read.
Festive Foods manufactures frozen pizzas for supermarkets in a 120,000 sq. feet facility and considers itself a "leading co-packer of USDA-certified frozen-topped pizza, sandwiches, dough products, and stuffed appetizers." The company sells its products to supermarkets nationwide.

Walmart is a seller of at least one of the company's brands.

Viral Video Appears To Show 100s Of Dead Cattle Hit By Kansas Heatwave
zerohedge.com

"Chaos in food supply chains continues to worsen as thousands of cattle across Kansas have mysteriously died. Officially, at least 2,000 cattle died of "extreme heat and humidity" amid triple-digit temperatures, however skeptics aren't buying it as viral footage shows hundreds of cows laying upside down."

"The high-end of estimates comes from Progressive Farmer Senior Editor Victoria Myers, who reports preliminary estimates from feedlot or feed yards that show 10,000 fat cattle across the state have died because of scorching hot weather."

"One farmer insists "wasn't the heat."" Others had similar commentary.

I'm with the farmers/skeptics. It wasn't the heat.
It is said (either Indian or Tibetan prognostications) that when people stop respecting cows, the end of the cycle is near.
