The bilateral relationship between Argentina and the United States added a new chapter with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the civil engineers that manage the Mississippi waterway and the General Ports Administration (AGP) to develop information exchange and training on waterways and inland rivers.
Ambassador Marc Stanley, together with Corps of Engineers representative Adrien McConnell, signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the new state-owned company's new controller, Gastón Benvenuto, and highlighted the expectation of working together with the Argentine government and the AGP.
In a joint communiqué, both countries stressed the importance of ensuring efficiency and transparency in port operations amid a global scenario marked by climate change and the need to combat illegal activities in waterways. They also stressed that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the relevance of maritime transport and the stability of port operators, underscoring the strategic importance of this agreement for both nations.
The agreement between the AGP and the U.S. government will focus on improving the efficiency and transparency of waterway management, as well as strengthening administrative processes to ensure proper operation. In addition, future security collaborations will be explored to address common challenges in the protection of port and navigation operations.

The Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata -also known as the Paraná War- took place between August 2, 1845 and August 31, 1850. During this period, the British and French squadrons closed to trade all the ports of the Argentine Confederation and those of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, with the exception of Montevideo.
The British and French diplomacy justified the blockade by the participation of the Argentine army -depending on the governor of the Province of Buenos Aires, Juan Manuel de Rosas- in the Great War in Uruguay. According to the intervening powers, that participation was a direct attack on the independence of that country, was accompanied by unjustified cruelties, and harmed the commercial interests of France and the United Kingdom in the Río de la Plata basin.
In practice, it mattered much more to the aggressor powers to force Argentina and Uruguay to recognize their inland rivers as not subject to their sovereignty and to allow them to trade freely through these rivers.
The Anglo-French military action did not obtain the desired surrender of Rosas, although it succeeded in sustaining the government of Montevideo for six years. Finally, the intervention was lifted by means of the Arana-Southern Treaty and the Arana-Lepredour Treaty.
However, Rosas' victory was short-lived, since in 1851 the governor of Entre Ríos, Justo José de Urquiza, revolted and managed to defeat him and force him into exile in the battle of Caseros, in February 1852.
