I am going in vacation for 3 weeks to our natal country Romania in 5 days from now. At first I was not at all willingly to go but my parents have insisted that I do. The grandfather form the side of my mom, witch is the only one left, is very old and it might be the last opportunity to see him. Aside from that, my father is unable to care anymore then 2 kgs for any longer then an hour because of damaged spine. Therefor, as they said, I can be of aid with luggage and not let mother with all the burden. For this reason, I feel obliged to go.

I waited this long to say it out loud because we were waiting until the last week to decide if we cancel it or not. Father is not feeling well, has back pains. In any way, they insist on going.

If I come back alive, I will surely have something interesting to tell.
Here's a little history to where we are going to stay for 2 weeks:

History of the balneary treatment at Olanesti

The balneary treatment in Romania has been practiced since the roman times ( 2th century, a.d. ), proofs being visible even today at Baile Herculane or Geoagiu Bai through some constructions made to this purpose. The mineral waters from Olanesti are known and used since year 1760. The first analyses of these waters were made by dr. Karl Friederich Siller in year 1860. In 1853-1854 is made the second analysis by Petre Poenaru, and later by the chemistry teacher Alexe Marin.
Due to the general dr. Carol Davila petition who visit the station with the students of medical school from Bucharest in year 1869, the chemist doctor Bernath Lendway makes a new analysis of the springs and communicates the result on the day of June 14th,1869 through the following telegram:
“I arrived at Olanesti on June 8th, I work and I found at 12 mineral saline sources the presence of iodine in a very considerable quantity, few sources are accompanied with carbonates, meaning alkaline waters; there is also free carbonate acid, six sources with magnesium purgative waters, sixteen sulphur sources, three hundreds with freely mixed, abundant, rare development of gas. I didn’t find Ferrum waters until now. Therefore, the baths from Olanesti represent mineral waters of an extraordinary nature, rare example” .
Subscribed by dr. BERNATH

In year 1873 the mineral waters from Olanesti are sent to the exhibition from Vienna where there are examined again, obtaining the gold medal. Doctor BENATH finds the sulphur waters from Olanesti superior to those from Mehadia, the alkaline ones are identical with the waters from Vals (Ardeaches), Vichy, Chateauneuf.
The superiority of waters from Olanesti to other foreign sources is also found mentioned by dr. BERNATH in the letter addressed to Mr. P. Munteanu in august 1869 in which he express like this: “After chemical, analytical, comparative works the mineral waters from Olanesti have been compared with many foreign sources and is has been established that there are stronger than those from Zaizon, Heibron, Wyshbad etc. regarding iodine and stronger than those from mehadia, Baden (Vienna), Schlagenbad, Weilbach, Calimanesti, Niphon, Boboci regarding sulphuratted acid, brimstone”.

Geological and hydrological studies made by dr. KNOTT, general inspector of mineral waters in Austria, like the chemical analysis of all springs made by professor KRIZAN from Chemical Institute of Prague permitted the beginning of collecting 22 mineral water sources in year 1922, according to the newest techniques of the period. The action benefited by the support of RUMPEL A.G House from Vienna, specialized on these works. [TOP]

Therapeutically indications:

From the large variety of affections in which are recommended the mineral waters from Olanesti we remind the following:
• Alimentary canal affections
• Hepatic - biliary affections
• Renal and urinary ducts affections
• Dermatological affections, cutaneous allergies
• Metabolically and nutrition affections
• Respiratory affections

As associated illnesses:
• Locomotors system affections
• Nervous system affections
• Gynecological affections

The treatment is made both by internal cure (Crénothérapie) and external cure to which are ensured suitable therapeutically equipments and procedures

Mineral waters, climate and air
Baile Olanesti station has the many mineral springs (over 30), different by their chemical composition, by their successful utilization on various illnesses and by their healing effects.
Few localities have the climate of these station and even fewer have the Olanesti atmosphere, lacked from that humidity and fog so hurtful even for the healthful.
The mineral waters from Olanesti station are classified as follows:
• The sulphurous waters have a desensitize action to the body of sick people with different allergic affections or dermatological illnesses.
• Diuretic waters for kidney illnesses.
• Laxative, tonic waters for alimentary canal.
• Alkaline and bicarbonate waters excellent in stomach affections.
• Ferruginous waters which efficacy is recognized by all and especially by anemic and those with blood altercations.
• Iodine, chloride, sodium and sulphurous waters for baths. [TOP]

Olanesti station possess one of the rarest particularity that is: due to its large number on mineral springs that emanate abundant gases especially sulphuretted hydrogen, the station air is in a continuous state of mineralization.
This gas, sulphuretted hydrogen, is very important to any organism, both ill and healthy because having a great affinity for oxyhemoglobin of blood which is found in lungs during inspiring units with it and penetrates in body tissue where it decompose, liberating oxygen that is given directly to those tissues of the body.
But this oxygen is a “rising oxygen” that constitute the strongest therapeutic agent for the body because it destroys by burning all foreign substances, all toxins, microbic poisons deposited in different bodies as well as in the blood of the entire body.
In other words, is the strongest known antiseptic of blood and organic tissues and is used in natural mode until nowadays. Is the regenerator of the body.

In our way back we are going to stay 1 day in Finland, Helsinki. I didn't do my homework well, so I don't know much about the places there other then they have the most complicated street names I've seen. If anyone here has good tips as to what to visit, considering that is only one day, that would be nice.

I will try and stay in touch as much as possible.
Tips and tricks of any kind are greatly, greatly apreciated.
Thkx in advance. ;)

If You don't like shopping you could spend a hole day at Suomenlinna(Viapori), or Sveaborg in Swedish, the fortified islands just outside, if the weather is favourable. Ferry's traffic all day from kauppatori in front of the presidential palace...

It's a small city, what are Your interests?

Thank you clerck de bonk. I never thought I'll go in another country to shop but the idea doesn't look too bad. Interests? Well, it would be my guess that parents will enjoy some architecture and open air; I on the other hand would like to see people, maybe their customs, etc. To be honest I don't know. We picked up a hotel that is right in the middle of the city, maybe walk in all directions. ;D

I hope you will! :)

You might want to visit Poenari Castle, the real (as they say) Dracula's Castle that is said to be one of the most haunted places in the world:

It's placed near the town of Curtea de Arges that is very close to Olanesti and is quite interesting itself with its amazing monasteries.

Have a safe and exciting trip!

If one is acquainted with Finnish architecture and Aalto(wave ;)) then the Finlandia talo is a must.

Sounds like a good idea. Helsinki center isn't that big but a day strolling the shoreline might take forever though ;D

Thanks Possibility of Being for the links. The suggestion seems very tempting and I am considering going there since it is so close. I also had in mind to visit some of the monasteries there, there are lots of them.
Thkx

andi, if you want to turn your dread into excitement, think of this as the next chapter in your autobiography - andi's Excellent Adventure! While you're there, really pay attention to all your sensory inputs, including your intuitions and impressions.

Some say a picture is worth a thousand words. Others say no movie can do justice to a good book. I say why not just record everything with your whole being? If you have the aim of sharing your experience with others, yet you leave your journal at home and your camera with someone else, you will really feel the pressure to be totally present to every moment. When you look back on this experience the memories may be so vivid it might seem like the best time of your life!

Hope this helps. :)

Bud, you post really hits home. I'll take this with me and try to remember it anywhere I may be. Thanks so much Bud for this advice, it gives a completely different flavor to this trip. :flowers:

I wish everybody a happy forum-ing. Tonight we are living. Can't wait to be back! ;)
Thanks all for your patience and understanding.

Hi guys, I'm glad to be back.
Contrary to my expectations it was a very nice experience, something I do not regret.
I'll put up some pictures soon for you guys to see -they are worth a look if you are curios.

What did I learn? That I need to start over and re-evaluate myself; press the reset button and start everything anew, only this time on a different base. I've seen so many programs running in me and found them to be so ugly that I got scared to death. This provoked in me a new sensation. A sensation where everything I know about myself is wrong. Is like having theory fallowing a certain line and parallel to it another line, the practical line -and this two never meet. My experiences and my doings are separated; like someone who has learnt a math book but has never practiced the exercises in it. I'm such a newbie!
In any case, thank you guys for being here for people like me who really need to learn. Patience is needed.
I'm not loosing faith, it is only a hard time in my life and worst of all I am probably making others suffer without being fully aware of it.

Thanks Bud, your advice was super helpful!

Hi Possibility of Being, the castle was(is) great through the pictures don't reveal the real beauty up there! Thanks.

Welcome back, Andi. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Nothing like extended travel (especially with family) to bring out programs. But, the good thing is, you were able to SEE them. Onwards and upwards! ;)

p.s. I have seen a lot of castles in my day, but I'd love to see Dracula's Castle. It looks awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing your pics.

I'm so full of them that is hard no to see them, the hard part is to make a decision and accept the level at witch I am, and work from there, rather than trying so hard to be in line with everyone up there.
