Tornadoes around the World

It’s Never Happened in Wisconsin’s Recorded History Until Today

It was a historic weather day in the Stateline area with record-warm weather and severe weather moving through the area.

We're not even halfway through February and temperatures feel like spring, but that also brings dangerous weather that broke out in northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin today.

Wisconsin Records Its First Ever February Tornado

Several videos have surfaced that show a distinct funnel cloud forming near Evansville, Wisconsin.

Reports that more than 1,000 people are without power and some of the major roads in the area are blocked including US Highway 14 highway closed "between County Road M and County Road H due to debris blocking the road," according to Channel3000.

Another surprise tornado, this time in Indonesia: "The first ever occurence of an F2 tornado in Indonesia's West Java recorded history was on February 21, 2024."

Indonesia investigates after first large-scale tornado strikes

Indonesia was struck by a tornado of a scale previously unrecorded in the country that injured at least 33 people and damaged buildings, government officials said.

After the violent wind swept the town of Sumedang in West Java province on Wednesday, a climatologist at government research body BRIN Erma Yulihastin, said the agency would "reconstruct and investigate the tornado".

In a post on social media app X, formerly known as Twitter, she said it was similar to the kind of violent winds that often occur in the northern hemisphere. Until now, only smaller tornadoes, known as "angin puting beliung" have been recorded in Indonesia.

Kay Tiara, a Sumedang resident, told Reuters she had felt panic as the winds approached.

Dangerous tornado reported in Ohio, others cause damage in Indiana, Kentucky

A dangerous half mile wide tornado was reported in northern Ohio Thursday night, while several others were confirmed in Kentucky and Indiana in a severe weather outbreak linked to several "significant injuries."

"THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS and dangerous tornado on the ground," the National Weather Service's Cleveland office wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Several people were significantly injured in Winchester, Indiana where severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes occurred Thursday afternoon.

Despite reports of three deaths in the eastern Indiana town, state police said they can not confirm any deaths as of Friday 12:15 am EDT.

A very large super cell formed over Topeka, Kansas this afternoon (April 30). This funnel cloud formed right over someone's house:

This is a time-lapse shot of the rotation of the cell over Topeka. Much like the one near Omaha last week, this is a huge cell:

Aaron Jayjack caught this one two hours ago. Yes, he is getting way too close for comfort, but the whole video shows how chaotic it is on the ground while from a distance, the funnel is well formed and has a completely different visual appearance. What a bizarre lateral shape to the funnel. two more like that have been captured in Kansas. I've never seen that multiple times in one outbreak.

And another one in China on April 26:

At least five people were killed and 33 injured in a tornado Saturday that struck Guangzhou, a city of 19 million people in southern China, according to Chinese state media.

Authorities say 141 factory buildings were damaged but no residential houses collapsed, according to the Xinhua news agency. It said a preliminary assessment put the tornado at level-three intensity, two below the highest level of five.
Guangzhou, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) from Hong Kong, is the capital city of Guangdong province.

A weather station in Liangtian Village, Baiyun District, about 1.7 miles from where the tornado hit, registered a maximum wind gust of 20.6 meters per second, Xinhua reported.

As of 10 p.m. local time, search and rescue operations had ended.

The tornado follows multiple days of heavy rains that have lashed southern China, unleashing deadly floods and threatening to upend the lives of tens of millions of people as rescuers rush to evacuate residents trapped by rising waters.

Guangdong province, an economic powerhouse home to 127 million people, has seen widespread flooding that has forced more than 110,000 people to be relocated, state media reported, citing the local government.

Earlier this week state media reported that floods had killed at least four people in Guangdong.

Since April 16, sustained torrential rains have pounded the Pearl River Delta, China’s manufacturing heartland and one of the country’s most populated regions, with four weather stations in Guangdong registering record rainfall for April.
