Romania

I see there is another thread on Romania but it did not seem appropriate to post there. I'm here on business for the second time. Not too sure what to say other then the driving experience is crazy and the food is certainly different but good. The people I work with treat me well, too well in fact. I suppose it is a nice change from home but with everything that is happening lately I am anxious to continue coming here. In some ways I like it here better than at home, people are more friendly but I usually think that is because I am not from here and they are working for 'US'. Probably a bad pun but nonetheless I figured I should post about it. Also everyones English is far superior to my Romania :-[

I understand that Romanian is a latin language. I speak Spanish reasonably well. Would I undertand much Romanian?

The words seem familiar, even sometimes to English. I find vocabulary to be the hardest at the moment, but the spellings are very different. I have to have the words spelled out to remember or understand how they are pronounced all the time. I did learn some Spanish in school and I actually relate a lot of the words in Romanian to what I know in Spanish so I would say yes. I am always saying "that sounds like X in Spanish", if you know what I mean.

Try one of these for example:

and report back! :)

Hy Rise, what part of the country are you in? Driving there is nuts, you're right; it is an irresponsible act practiced country wide.
I'd say that people are more friendly because they are not as fragmented as in the US but it is slowly fading away too. Once you get out of the central places, things are a lot better.

Enjoy the ride :)

I could be wrong... words are similar to Spanish and that helps a lot, what I think may be hard for you is to connect the words together and the composition and articulation of words. Grammar is really though for a non-natives but practice pays.

I'm in Timisoara. I avoid driving at all possible but when I have to I always sit in the back :P. I think I find it more friendly because everyone greets you well even if you have never seen them. Like passing in the hallway for instance, unless you know someone in the states people never say hi where I'm from. Seems simple after writing it but I certainly notice the difference.

How would you describe Romania to someone who has never been. Are the cultures and food more Russian-influenced or more Eastern European or other? I'm really unfamiliar with Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria and that area. The two cities that I haven't been to yet but are near there are Budapest and Istanbul.
