My understanding is that the US has urged Zelensky to evacuate from Bakhmut so that the very experienced and substantial forces located there can fight another day. But the great actor has insisted this is his "fortress" (Alamo?) and will defend it to the end, indicating a potential emotional overattachment to a particular system of blown out buildings, trenches and pillboxes.
