Well, THAT is interesting!

Explanation: Black spots have been discovered on Mars that are so dark that nothing inside can be seen. Quite possibly, the spots are entrances to deep underground caves capable of protecting Martian life, were it to exist. The unusual hole pictured above was found on the slopes of the giant Martian volcano Arsia Mons. The above image was captured three weeks ago by the HiRISE instrument onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter currently circling Mars. The holes were originally identified on lower resolution images from the Mars Odyssey spacecraft, The above hole is about the size of a football field and is so deep that it is completely unilluminated by the Sun. Such holes and underground caves might be prime targets for future spacecraft, robots, and even the next generation of human interplanetary explorers.

there's a newer picture of this pit where its eastern wall is visible in sunlight (i'm not putting the image here since it's quite big):

it's a part of a bigger photo that can be viewed at:

BTW, this HiRISE site is just great. if someone would like to view photos, i recommend using IAS Viewer.

Those "holes" remind me of the tunnel being 'drilled' or 'beamed' by the ship in orbit from the movie, Aliens vs. Predator.

I wonder what lies at the end of that tunnel.

There is a possibility that those pics are tampered to hide something else??

It IS quite impressive to look at. And if you look at the picture lostinself posted, you will see that it is indeed a cave with a cave-wall.

The Mars Reconaissance Orbiter team has dubbed this cave "Jeanne". They are saying that it was formed by lava on the side of the volcano. The hole is where the top of the cave crashed down. They are estimating that the cave is at least 78 meters deep (about 250 feet).

I was wondering the same thing. It's also odd that the picture lostinself brought up has what looks to be craters. I wouldn't doubt meteors could reach inside such a hole but why are they now just being discovered?

if there was something more to those pictures, i guess they just wouldn't be released to the public.

for example, although HiRISE has a picture of the famous "face on Mars" in high resolution, i can't find any photos presenting other artificial-looking objects that have been found in Cydonia region, such as "the Fort" (a rock with V-shaped feature). these objects can be clearly seen on some older, well-known photos:

http_://www.mars-earth.com/largecool1.jpg

as far as i know, HiRISE does not provide any images of them. it's little hard to imagine they hadn't been photographed along with "the Face".

"The Face" is here:

Maybe there is a connection between those holes and Atlantis.

I got remembered by that when you mentioned ''The Face'', which is a ''Energy transfer point for crystalline power/symbolism as in monuments or statuary'', as the C's have said.

Well, guess it could be almost everything.
