INTERVIEW/ INTERVISTA. Dir. Federico Fellini.

Cinecitta, the huge movie studio outside Rome, is 50 years old and Fellini is interviewed by a Japanese TV crew about the films he has made there over the years as he begins production on his latest film. A young actor portrays Fellini arriving at Cinecitta the first time by trolley to interview a star. Marcello Mastroianni dressed as Mandrake the Magician floats by a window and Fellini followed by TV crew takes him to Anita Ekberg's villa where the Trevi fountain scene from Dolce vita, La (1960) is shown on a sheet that appears and disappears as if by magic.
- Written by Dale O'Connor <daleoc@interaccess.com>

While shooting a movie about his arrival to Cinecittà to interview a famous star, Federico Fellini is interviewed by the Japanese television. Fellini highlights and revisits the beginning of his career portrayed by the young actor Sergio Rubini in the early 40's. Then he casts new characters for his next movie, "Amerika", from Franz Kafka. Later Marcello Mastroianni performing Mandrake visits Fellini and his producers, cast and crew and together they pay a visit to Anita Ekberg in her country cottage. Last but not the least, Fellini foresees the end of the golden era to the cinema industry with the competition of the television.

The movie does not have subtitles in English, but still you can admire this movie.

Velvet Goldmine (1998) U.K./U.S.A. Dir. Todd Hayness

The film could find full on you tube, but was suppressed.
I found only parts of the movie in castillian (Spanish) and trailers, but it's worth being rich musically and visually.

The title is inspired by a homonymous song written by David Bowie, which was included as a B-side on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars album summit of the movement glam and considered one of the best ever Rock. Haynes had initially planned to make a kind of biography of David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust phase, but the rock chameleon refused because he had planned to make a film based on his character glam. Because of this, the two main characters are fictional, but the figures influenced by Bowie and Iggy Pop. It tells the story of Arthur Stuart (Bale), a reporter investigating the career of the Glam rock singer Brian Slade is narrated ( Rhys Meyers), mysteriously murdered one of their
concerts, soon discovering that it had been a stage, and whose career decays to nothing after that. This requires interviewing people who were part of his life at the time; Curt Wild (McGregor), a friend with whom singer also collaborated on several of his albums, Mandy Slade (Colette), his ex-wife and Jerry Devine, his manager. Although the story is fictional, it is obvious the inspiration that had Haynes in Jobriath, David Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop singers.

The independent film was well received by critics and had a moderate gain at the box office, besides being the film that propelled the career of Rhys Meyers, who later appear in films that were more successful, such as Match Point Woody Allen and Mission : Impossible III next to Tom Cruise and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

A Psychoanalytic Thriller
Restored by the Munich Film Museum
and the F.W. Murnau Foundation

In the 1920s, film studios around the world sought to capitalize on the public's curiosity about the newborn science of psychoanalysis. In 1925,
Hans Neumann (of Ufa's Kulturfilm office) contacted members of Sigmund Freud's inner circle with a plan to make a dramatic film that explores the mystifying process of the interpretation of dreams. With the help of noted psychologists Karl Abraham and Hanns Sachs, and under the direction of G.W. Pabst (Pandora's Box), SECRETS OF A SOUL was completed.

Werner Krauss, who had played the deranged Dr. Caligari six years earlier, stars as a scientist who is tormented by an irrational fear of knives and the irresistible compulsion to murder his wife. Driven to the brink of madness by fantastic nightmares (designed by Ernö Metzner and photographed by Guido Seeber in a brilliant mix of expressionism and surrealism), he encounters a psychoanalyst who offers to treat the perplexing malady.

Awards
1948: Oscar: Best Special Effects. 2 nominations
1949: Venice Film Festival: Best Actor (Joseph Cotten)

When you have talent, even the most implausible argument can be used to shoot a small masterpiece. Relying on the strength of an incredibly credible interpretations and magnificence of a photograph that masterfully combines two opposite records, Dieterle combined with wisdom realistic record with the fantastic, to provide a peculiar fairy tale that captivates by its lyricism, its strength and its romanticism.

He is requested by Secret Service agent Duane Stevensen to make an appearance as the President at a hotel. Dave assumes it is a matter of security, but it is really to cover up Mitchell's extramarital affair with a White House staffer.

Mitchell suffers a severe stroke during the rendezvous, leaving him in a coma. White House Chief of Staff Bob Alexander and Communications Director Alan Reed convince Dave to continue impersonating the President. They tell him that Vice President Gary Nance is mentally unbalanced, but Bob does not want Nance in power because his honesty would get in the way of Bob's lies and corruption. Only Bob, Alan, the Secret Service, and the medical staff know of the switch. First Lady Ellen Mitchell leads a separate life, rarely seeing the President.

The public is notified that Mitchell has had a "minor circulatory problem of the head." With Dave established as President, Bob and Alan send Nance on a 12-nation goodwill tour of Africa and implicate him in a savings and loan fraud. Once Nance is forced to resign, Bob plans for Dave to nominate him as Vice President, whereupon Mitchell will have a more serious stroke and Bob will ascend to the Presidency.

As if drawn to her by cosmic force, he soon finds himself unwittingly in the company of his previous incarnation's wife. Golden Door
Film
The Observer
With its powerful biblical allusions, the stunning Golden Door offers a timely analysis of the forces that drive mass migration

Mark Kermode
Golden Door (Nuovomundo)
(118 mins, PG)
Directed by Emanuele Crialese
Starring Vincenzo Amato, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Aurora Quattrocchi, Francesco Casisa
In a haunting scene from this visually striking third feature from Respiro director Emanuele Crialese, a sea of humanity is silently parted as if by Moses's staff, as a ship drifts away from a dock in old Europe en route to the glittering promises of the New World. Pictured in a God's-eye view from above (a recurrent motif), the crowd floats eerily apart, an expanse of water growing inexorably between them. Then, amid the ethereal stillness, the ship's horn blares out and they turn their eyes heavenward, as if summoned by the trumpets of Judgment Day. It is a wonderful moment, rich in pictorial poetry, laden with spiritual portent, economically evoking the film's themes of death and rebirth, progress and loss.
Evocatively filmed by gifted cinematographer Agnes Godard, Crialese's most ambitious film is a timeless tale of 'metamorphosis through a journey', a fabulist voyage wrapped around the down-to-earth detail of a Sicilian family's emigration to America in the early 20th century. Focusing on the transient and the transcendent, the film is divided into three distinct segments: the first depicts the Mancuso clan's harsh but magical life in the mountains of Italy; the second follows their transatlantic voyage in the slave-like confinement of a lurching ship; the third documents their arrival at Ellis Island (known as 'the Isle of Tears'), the golden door to this earthly heaven.

My Dinner With Andre

IMDb
Wallace Shawn
... Wally Shawn

Andre Gregory
... Andre Gregory

Jean Lenauer
... Waiter

Roy Butler
... Bartender

In New York City, an actor/playwright agrees to have dinner with a theatre director who he has not seen, literally, for years. He is afraid of meeting with him because of the stories that he has heard about the director sobbing on a sidewalk and talking with trees. Obviously, something terrible had happened to him.

He meets with him at an expensive restaurant (he is given a coat and necktie to wear, since he is not dressed appropriately) and waits at the bar for his old friend to arrive.

Once Andre arrives, he hugs Wally, who feels that he is really in the theatre now. The staff at the restaurant know Andre well and seat the two immediately at a table that provides a fair amount of privacy.

Wally needs help understanding the menu, and Andre, with a sense of humour, helps him with the French cuisine. They both order quail.

Over the next 45 minutes or so, Andre tries to explain what has happened in his life. It seems that he has been on a fantastical journey of enlightenment. Wally mostly listens in disbelief.

Andre takes the viewer on adventures to the forests of Poland where he worked with a fellow experimental theatre director; to the Sahara with a Tibetan Buddhist monk; to a lush paradise of plants in an inhospitable region in the north of Scotland; to Montauk, Long Island, where he stayed on Richard Avedon's estate and took part in a rebirth ritual.

Andre had been involved in breaking free of the habits of mechanical, automatic living.

The dinner conversation ends with Wally challenging some of the methods and purpose of Andre's pursuits. He is confused, angry, and feels Andre has wasted years of his life. Wally is a pragmatic rationalist, to assign a label to him. He feels that Andre's magical thinking is ridiculous and can be harmful to both himself and others.

As Wally continues to verbally attack his former colleague, he begins to realise how confused he is about the stories that Andre has told him. In confronting his confusion, Wally begins to understand there may be other ways to view the world. There is no resolution in the conversation. (Edited for non-spoiler )
