Data Process and Inversion (Length and Intensity of the Ruppter)
We analyzed 40 teleseismic broadband P waveforms, 26 broadband SH waveforms, and 47 long period surface waves selected based on data quality and azimuthal distribution. Waveforms are first converted to displacement by removing the instrument response and are then used to constrain the slip history using a finite fault inverse algorithm (Ji et al., 2002). We begin modeling using a hypocenter matching or adjusted slightly from the initial NEIC solution ( location = 6.5°N, 126.7°E; depth = 65.6 km ), and a fault plane defined using either the rapid W-Phase moment tensor (for near-real time solutions), or the gCMT moment tensor (for historic solutions).

Result

This result is based on the moment tensor nodal plane ( strike = 156.0°; dip = 54.0° ). The seismic moment release based upon this plane is 5.2e+19 N-m (Mw = 7.1) using a 1D crustal model interpolated from CRUST2.0 (Bassin et al., 2000).

USGS just updated their report to say that the main quake was actually an M8.1, the M7.5 was a foreshock that occurred 170 seconds earlier.

Seismic observations suggest this earthquake is part of a complex seismic sequence. Our current interpretation is that this earthquake is the mainshock to a M7.5 that occurred ~170s earlier. The location, depth, mechanism, and magnitude of this earthquake is preliminary and less well constrained than typical events of this size due to interference from the preceding M7.5 foreshock. Research is being conducted on this sequence to better understand the faulting geometry and details of rupture. This analysis will take time and our understanding will likely evolve. This page will be updated as we learn more about these interesting events.

Tectonic Summary​

The August 12, 2021 M8.1 earthquake in the South Sandwich Islands occurred as the result of reverse faulting at approximately 48 km depth in the Scotia subduction zone. The focal mechanism solution indicates slip occurred on either a steeply dipping fault dipping to the northwest, or on a shallowly dipping plane dipping to the southeast. Note that in this location, the subduction zone interface dips to the west. The earthquake occurred ~3 minutes following a M7.5 foreshock that was located at a depth of ~63 km and ~90 km to the north. At the location of the M8.1 earthquake, the South America plate subducts westward beneath the Scotia plate and South Sandwich microplate (a component of the broader Scotia plate). The South America plate subducts at a rate of ~71 mm/yr relative to the South Sandwich microplate. The depth and the mechanism of this event are consistent with the earthquake rupturing within the subducted South America plate (an intraplate earthquake), rather than on the interface between the two plates. Given the temporal proximity of these two large earthquakes, however, a faulting mechanism for the M8.1 mainshock is difficult to accurately constrain due to the overlapping seismic waves.

While commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. Events of the size of the August 12, 2021 M8.1 earthquake are typically about 150 km x 75 km in size (length x width).

Over the previous century, eight other M7+ earthquakes, including the M7.5 foreshock, occurred within 250 km of the August 2021 M8.1 earthquake. The largest of these previous earthquakes was an M8.1 in May 1964. M7+ earthquakes in the South Sandwich Island region have historically occurred at intermediate-depths (broadly defined as 70-300 km depth). However, the largest earthquake in the region was a shallow (~10 km deep) M8.1 earthquake on June 27, 1929 that was located ~450 km northwest of the of August 2021 M8.1 earthquake along the northern boundary of the Scotia plate with the South America plate. None of these earthquakes are known to have caused fatalities, likely because of their remote location far from population centers that might be vulnerable to earthquake shaking.

In the 24 hours following the M8.1 mainshock, the USGS located 61 aftershocks of M4.5 or greater. The aftershock sequence during this time frame includes three aftershocks larger than M6 (M6.0, M6.2, and M6.3). The aftershocks span a trench-parallel distance of ~470 km, stretching from the M7.5 foreshock southward to the triple junction between the South America, South Sandwich, and Antarctica plates. These aftershocks span a depth range of 10-76 km, with most events with estimated depths occurring at 50-65 km depth. Preliminary locations for a subset of the aftershocks are located east of the trench indicating the potential presence of outer rise earthquakes, which occur as a result of downward flexure of the subducting slab.
