What are you listening to?

Today I'm listening to Joanna Newsom.. it's hard to link only a few of her songs, but here are some of my faves.. Her lyrics are so evocative and literary, wide ranging, full of places and people and history and times.. Amazing musician and singer too.. magic!!

Have One On Me, written in character as Lola Montez

Jackrabbits

Emily

A few others I love: Go Long, Sawdust and Diamonds, '81, On a Good Day

Bonus track:

Cassiopeia

"And I'll swim sweetly as a herring
Through the ether not despairing"

Very true refrain for nowadays and the video is also somehow almost post-apocaliptic 👍🤪

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
Music loud and women warm, I've been kicked around
Since I was born
And now it's alright, it's okay
And you may look the other way
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man
Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive
Well now, I get low and I get high
And if I can't get either, I really try
Got the wings of Heaven on my shoes
I'm a dancin' man and I just can't lose
You know it's alright, it's okay
I'll live to see another day
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man
Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive (ohh)
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive
Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
Music loud and women warm
I've been kicked around since I was born
And now it's all right, it's okay
And you may look the other way
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man
Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah (ah, ah, ah)
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah (ah, ah, ah, ay)
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah (ohh)
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive

Lyrics (translated)

They expelled me from heaven ...
A battle was lost.
I was condemned to hell
For his immense compassion.
And, although his son,
I know that I was born free ...
Free to choose
What is my decision.
Whether or not you are right
It does not matter to me;
The way to follow,
I only decide it.
Just me ... just me ...
He wanted slaves, not faithful;
He believed himself a father
And he was a dictator.
All those oppressed people
You have the right to rebellion ...
And, although his son,
I know that I was born free ...
Free to choose
What is my decision.
Whether or not you are right
It does not matter to me;
The way to follow,
Only I decide.
Sometimes I think
In returning,
To stand before him,
Ask for forgiveness...
It would be to assume,
My surrender.
THE SKY IS
YOUR HOPE;
FROM THERE WILL COME TO YOU
THE FORGIVENESS...
And I look up to the sky
Just to scream.
I know that I was born free ...
Free will be my decision.
Whether or not he is right
It does not matter to me;
The way to follow,
I decide.
I know that I was born free ...
Free will be my decision.
Whether or not he is right
It does not matter to me;
The way to follow,
I decide.
I decide ...
I decide ...
I DECIDE!
