“The Onion” files free speech brief with US Supreme Court

The Onion has filed a 23-page brief with the US Supreme Court, drawing attention to the case of a man from Ohio arrested for creating a parody Facebook page of his local police force.

In it, they have submitted evidence to the US government defending satire, and they did a good job. This could be the thing that they're remembered for in the long run! It is (in parts) a work of parody itself and worth a read 😃

This is great !

Why should anyone be arrested by the police for creating a parody Facebook page of a local police force ?

Are they so fearful of criticism, devoid of humour and arrogant that they feel the need to do this ? Surely they should be out protecting and serving, putting the taxpayers money to good use instead in this egocentric BS.

The Onion is a blessing to the world, and without it humanity would be much more dull IMO

I think that is a fantastic idea. Let Supreme court say what it wants to say. The "democracy" and its institutions with its supposed goal "of the people, by the people, for the people" became joke with the hijacking of control system. we will have to see whether the supreme court mocks itself by slashing the case. They can't slash it so easily without distinguishing free speech, citizen rights, what is fake and how it impacts public. Simple vendetta by police is not sufficient ground for the arrest.

That is as far as one can go peacefully in the democracy.
