The Great Play

I'm in the great play
And so are you
Memorising our scripts
Is what we actors must do
Playing a part
In the game of life
To learn all the rules
Of joy and strife
And the fall of a tear
Is but a moment in time
Orchestrated by sorrow
And carried out by a crime
Whatever the reason
We take to the stage
Deliver our lines
As the voice of the age
And some will be heard
And others may not
If your presence is brief
You must use what you've got
If you're not the lead
You must offer support
If it's part of the whole
Then it's part of the thought
Perhaps you're a stagehand
Or a costume designer
Don't think that you're useless
No position is minor
For the story is central
To the lives that we live
In loving and hating
Always something to give
The hero's journey
Is the course of the soul
To work on the self
To make knowledge its goal
Not the lies of others
But your own solid proof
Where teachings are given
And you make them your truth
So the climax draws nearer
Many chapters have passed
In the play of your life
Many questions were asked
It was you who decided
On the story you told
You followed direction
Gave your heart to the role
You gave your performance
For a round of applause
Had your time in the spotlight
Had your curtain calls
But now the time comes
To exit the stage
We're at the end of the story
On the final page
And what did we learn
From this Great Play?
That it's all just a show
On the opening day
So sit back and enjoy it
In your front row seat
Was the drama convincing?
Now the play is complete
We saw love, we saw hate
And history too
Comedy and tragedy
It was much ado
Scientific progress
That filled us with pride
Plays within plays
And lies within lies
Political scandals
And revolution
Religion and fear
Held the same resolution
In theatrical cycles
Of death and rebirth
The play is observed
In heaven and Earth
Now the stage is deserted
And for women and men
The Great Play has ended
There's a new one to pen
