The Code of the Beast? (a little exercise)

About two years ago I had a job as a salesman for Point of Sale (POS) machines (debit/credit card machine) for a private company. I was pitching a client who owned a Caribbean restaurant in the downtown area with a colleage. The owner was adament in refusing to have such a machine, as he was with one with a bank, because of his genuine distrust over the increasing role electronics plays in our lives, specifically with money and the subsequent invasion of privacy inherent with credit cards, so-called "credit", etc. We all ended up having a delightful and spirited conversation about this (obviously this wouldn't lead to a sale but we were enjoying the topic nonetheless). As my last job was at a large database information company for the medical industry (with many pharmaceutical giants as clients) where I was responsible for validating information with our database on "medical professionals" in the US I was all too aware of the dangerous effect the Information Age had on us. After all I had an incredible amount of personal information on millions of people and was helping giant pharmaceuticals shovel their poison to the public. My conscience definitely felt queasy about the whole affair.

I wanted to share what I had learned from the C transcripts about the whole 666 = VISA, but a certain language barrier got in the way.

However the owner of the restaurant had a very fascinating little exercise to show us which I'd like to share here:

Grab a piece of paper, pen and (if you need one) a calculator. List down all the letters of the alphabet. Then, next to each letter, write in ascending order the multiples of 6 (i.e. A = 6, B = 12, C = 18...Z =144 etc.). Then write COMPUTER somewhere else on the paper and next to each letter write the corresponding value to that letter (i.e. C=18,O=90,M=78, etc.). Once that is done add up and calculate the sum of those values (18+90+78, etc.)

The answer will amuse you.

What was the point of that little anecdote and exercise?

Well, I just happened to recall that memory after reading this:

Keep in mind that it's from a rather religious source and it only seems to be religious groups who talk about this when I googled the topic. Still it would be interesting to see whether if this checks out or not. And, after all, isn't Brussels the Headquarters of NATO as well...?

While there may be fragments of truth to some of the ideas on that page, the part about the "Beast" computer in Brussels is fiction that transformed into myth, essentially because of bad journalism. It was originally created by an author called Joe Musser for a Christian novel called "Behold a Pale Horse", which was then adapted into a movie for which promotional "Newspapers" were created, clippings of these were then found by reporters from another, real newspaper, who then reported the ideas as facts, which in turn were then picked up again by a Christian magazine, etc etc... Quite amazing what you can get away with when you just dress things up in the right packaging!

It's a well known fact that the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) is storing information about all the financial transactions done in the world on a big computer and its headquarters are located in Brussels.

Even the CIA has access to this Bank transfer information.
