The Brick Testament -- MYRTH!

Illustrations to selected scenes from the Bible, made solely out of Lego blocks.

From the website:

There are those who believe it to be divinely inspired, but The Brick Testament has been created entirely by The Rev. Brendan Powell Smith who builds all the characters and settings out of LEGO bricks, then photographs them to create the illustrated stories found on The Brick Testament website and book series.

Rev. Smith has stated that the goal of The Brick Testament is to give people an increased knowledge of the contents of The Bible in a way that is fun and compelling while staying very true to the original versions. To this end, all stories are retold using direct quotes from The Bible.

I am still not sure whether this is a big joke or done in all seriousness, but it is HILARIOUS! Somehow LEGO blocks and critters really make all the absurdities of the formal religion stand out. My personal favorites are On Wealth and On Self-Mutilation from the New Testament :)

ROFTLMAO :):)

Ohhh, my God!
That is completely hilarious--especially the ratings sytems! I had a similar reaction to a milder version of religious absurdity today when I passed a church sign sharing this profound analogy:

"Worship is giving God a big hug"

Lord, help 'em ;)

You can say that again:

Ohhh, my GAWD!
I can't quite believe that this is being done with accepted religious piety... for example:

Hi,
I think this is all a joke. I read the FAQ page and below is the last question and answer.

9. Is he really a reverend?

Most ministers, priests, or other religious clerics would not actually use "The Reverend" before their own names, for to do so would be presumptuous and rather vain. The Rev. Brendan Powell Smith is not an ordained member of any earthly church, and is widely regarded as being both highly presumptuous and extremely vain.

Also, if you visit his personal site here http://www.thereverend.com/ you'll see he is not so very serious.

It is pretty hilarious!

Maybe it's a really convoluted way of saying "all in all it's just another brick in the wall" ... :P

yeah, I looked some more and this simply CAN'T be serious.

the reason why I was wondering is that he has published books with his Lego illustrations, on birth of Jesus and some other rosy religious topic, and a lot of Christians give these books two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Ironic, isn't it?

Below are a few Amazon reviews of the BT's "Jesus is Born", published as a book. The sequence is a great deal milder than many others on the site, but does include the scenes of circumcision and the killing of the firstborn:

I have both of these books of lego illustrations and love them both.

These books are NOT satire! They are true, illustrated stories from the Bible. There's a difference between mocking something and being humorous, and I think the Brick Testament on the whole is very respectful of the Bible. I have no problem with illustrating the Holy Ghost in lego.

They're very faithful renditions of the words of the bible.

Yes, there is some blood - but how can you tell the TRUE story of christmas without Herod and the murdering of the firstborns? This isn't about Santa Claus and some commercialzed hijacking of the holiday. This is the true story of christmas, don't buy it if you're looking for rudolf and frosty.

My Lego-fanatic son gave this 5 stars...but he says that he likes the Stories from the Book of Genesis just a bit more, if only for the compelling depiction of the flood. Very true to the Bible, and with a touch of humor that can be appreciated by children and adults. A great re-telling of the Christmas story!

I've noticed that every time my son reads one of Brendan Powell Smith's books, he spends a lot more time at the Lego table afterwards. These books seem to spur his creative instincts, while reinforcing biblical truths.

I just got my copy of "The Brick Testament: The Story of Christmas," and really got a kick out of it. Smith is very creative, and I'm still amazed at how he was able to render objects in Lego (frankincense! stockings! a manger! a Christmas tree!). It's a great Christmas gift (it'll fit in a stocking, too!), and good for teaching kids about the real story of Christmas. Bundle this book with a Lego set and you have an awesome gift where they can be inspired to create their own stories in Lego. A budding Brendan Powell Smith, if you will.

Regarding the appropriateness of this book for a younger audience, I went to a Catholic primary school (1st-6th grades), and I can tell you that there is *nothing* in "The Story of Christmas" that wasn't taught to us there. I like the idea of the Holy Ghost being rendered as a smiling ghost, because what better literal representation is there for a child to understand?

If this isn't BIZARRE, I don't know what is.

I have a confession to make:

I fell into temptation and used my mind. Before I knew it, I was consumed by my conviction that religious faith damns people to stupidity. Blinded by this truth, I then failed to see that this Lego Bible is completely corrupted by the most heavenly hilarity.

If Sister Laura hadn't reached out when she did, and shared those precious Lego Bible links, I would have never seen the error of my ways (nor would I have had the joy of laughing as hard or loud as I just did a minutes ago--even scaring the cat!)

So let me extend the right hand of fellowship to all of you New Age heathens ;), especially Sister Laura, and invite you to visit the website for Landover Baptist-- an earthly paradise of parodies . . .

Don't miss the link for Betty Bowers, "the best Christian in America" (She always carries a stone in her purse in case someone's needed to "cast the first stone.") ;)
