Strange creature found in Cerro Azul (Peru)

The Living Force
The discovery of a strange creature in Cerro Azul has aroused controversy among the people, for while some say it may be a being from another planet, others simply believe that is an animal.

Four teenagers aged between 14 and 16 years, met him at the Jet Blue Hill, on Saturday, while having fun in the place.

As recounted one of them, they suddenly saw the creature emerging from a cave located behind the water jet. At her appearance and it began to climb over the rocks to one of them panicked and began to thrash him and throw sticks, getting killed, after which they threw into the water and ran.

My first thought was - fetus of very large dog could be tweaked to look like this, I found it suspicious that pics don't show the endings of extremities and also we cant see the lower body. Then on second look the position of the ears doesn't have canine appearance, neither the neck or chest , also it doesn't seems skinned.
But then again those hoaxers out there seem to be very clever and skillful so I am going to keep my reservations.

Hmmmm. The head part and upper chest remind me of a sea lion, notice we can't see the ends of the 'arms' or the rest of the body. If a sea lion, its fur is gone, and from the head picture, it could be due to a deformity. If not a hoax, definitely a sick animal. Notice nothing in the picture can be used for scale? I have reservations that such an animal or being could be easily killed by teens if not all ready seriously injured or sick.

And why didn't the kids run away? Hm? Pardon the pun, but their story is quite "fishy".

I've certainly never participated in a hoaxing of creatures or phenomena, nor am I a zoologist, but that would be a hell of a lot of work to remove all the hair off some animal, sea lion, sloth, or whatever. For one thing, if I was playing around on some rocks with my buddies, and something like that thing came crawling towards me, who knows what would happen. The fight or flight instinct is quite powerful. I imagine that, in the case of this being a real event, that the possibility of a professional photographer, or crytozoologist just standing around to take detailed photographs would be unlikely. It's difficult to draw any conclusions without actually witnessing such a thing.

If it was living, I wonder what it would survive on... it appears toothless, but man it's got a good size tongue on it. Perhaps it licks calcium off stalactites in that cave. How fun it is to imagine the possibilities!

Yes, I cant understand why the didn't take better photos when they clearly had the capabilities. It seems as if all the pictures are from one photo, its just different levels of zoom and cropping/cutting.

I felt sad when I read it because you can see how majority of humanity reacts on something strange. They fear it and in that fear they kill it, so that's all about how peacful they are and have respect to other beings, maybe it wouldn't hurt them and I doubt it would because it has no teeth, no claws.

There is what looks like a claw, long nail or talon on what appears to be it's hand/paw where it overhangs the rock. I'm having a hard time believing this could be anything other than some special effects creation. Don't know, it has a look of some creature which has not reached full term gestation.

mmm looks to me like a latex-kind experiment. I've seen a long time ago a documentary about special effects and the way this creature looks reminds me of latex-dolls the use or at least those maslks they put on actors, it is flexible, can be put to look like a skin and easy to product. This creature seems to be completely inadapted to live in our environnement. In Puru? Even less. So for me it is a special effect doll, a window faller from a different environement (but in that case how could this creature even walk toward the humans and not be eafraid of them instead?).

This is the super quick translation from Croatian media sources, note the factual difference with Spanish sources ;

There are few photos of mutated creature which looks like one of Tolkien characters. The children from Panama which encountered it were so scared they stoned the poor creature. The pictures show slimy and bold humanoid creature about 150 cm tal, laying listless on the rocks next to the lake Cerro Azul in the midst of Panama.
'Gollum just emerged from the waterfalls and started approaching children who were playing on the shore. The children were so scared they started throwing stones which eventually killed the creature. The children told parent they pushed the body in to the lake. The adults carried the search of the lake and found 'Gollum's' body.
I ve already seen a creature like this - said one of the boys for The Sun - in Tolkien's movies.
Currently the animal is stored at Enivronmental Institute of Panama and zoologists assume it is a bold (maybe they wanted to say skinned?!) sloth. The debate is raging over the internet at the moment, mostly between pit bull and sloth fans

So where is the Cerro Azul? Google search reveals at least 4, 2 ( a volcano and a fishing village on the sea coast ) in Chille , one in Panama, and one in Mexico.
Do we have any members from Panama, it would be interesting to find out what really is behind this story. To me personally, sloth (skinned) makes most sense. Poor animal.

well sloths have claws like that. More I look at the picture more I am convinced its a sloth.
Even the creature's belly looks like sloths barrel like belly in which they ferment the leaves they eat.

Strange and unknown creatures found in last 2 years

Seems like lot of new unknown species found recently. I was reading: http://www.net.hr/znanost/page/2009/09/20/0145006.html Croatian web page with science thematic when I found out interesting story about unknown fish species catch of the coast of Brazil:

Characteristics:
1-No scales
2-Uneatable because of high body fat
3-Small flat teeth's
4-Small eyes
5-Length: 2 metres
6-Weight: 40kg

Or case of rare prehistoric shark, discovered by local residents in Shizuoka, southwest of Tokyo. The huge eel-like creature, considered to be a living fossil, was taken to Japan’s Awashima Marine Park and placed in a seawater pool. Only just a few hours after it was moved, the unusual shark died. video on; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZofZToSk2AY&feature=related

Or Giant sea stars or starfish that measure 24 inches (60 centimeters) found by New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research on February 15, 2008.

They and other researchers collected 30,000 sea creatures—many new to science—during a 35-day census in Antarctic waters in February and March, according to a March 26 announcement.

The large-scale survey was part of the International Polar Year and Census of Antarctic Marine Life programs, which study the diversity of Antarctic marine life. They found new species of sea cucumber, hydroids, or mysterious animal with a small crustacean perched on its back floats 7,218 feet (2,200 meters) below the surface in the Ross Sea off southern Antarctica, shrimplike crustacean, predatory fish, called a stareater and many more

Going a bit back in time I found more scientific web pages with unknown animal species:

Year 2005:

A team of scientists led by Conservation International (CI) found dozens of new species in a survey of New Guinea's Foja Mountains. http://news.mongabay.com/2006/0206-ng.html
Like: golden-mantled tree kangaroo, Undescribed frog species, Long-beaked echidna, An undescribed species of honeyeater, Six-wired Bird of Paradise (Parotia berlepschi) and many more.

I remember this story from when it came up on a Swedish web news paper. I were perplexed these kids supposedly killed it. Now on Wikipedia it says that wasn't the case. One of the kids gave another account:
A few days after the photographs were taken, one of the teenagers gave a different account in an interview with Telemetro Reporta, saying "I was in the river and I felt something grabbing my legs ... We took it out of the water and started throwing rocks and sticks at it. We had never seen anything like that."

And it goes on further to say this creature were already dead previous to the encounter and that it was in fact a brown-throated sloth.
The creature's corpse was recovered four days after the encounter, and a biopsy was performed by the National Environmental Authority of Panama (ANAM). The biopsy concluded that the corpse was in fact a male brown-throated sloth, a species common in the area. André Sena Maia, a veterinarian who works at Niterói Zoo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, explained that "most people know how a dead animal looks like in a dry environment", and claimed that "the body must have got stuck under the water, and the movement of the currents gave the false impression that it was alive."[3] A necropsy revealed that severe trauma had been inflicted on the body of the sloth, and Melquiades Ramos, a specialist from the ANAM Department of Protected Areas, estimated that the body had been in the water for "about two days" prior to discovery. The hairlessness was probably caused by the fact it was submerged in water, which can lead to acceleration of fur loss, resulting in smooth skin.[3] A post-mortem bloating further contributed to the unusual appearance of the corpse.[1][3] After the sloth was identified, its body was buried by ANAM staff.[3]
