ROME -- A Vatican researcher claims she has found a nearly invisible text on the Shroud of Turin and says the discovery proves the authenticity of the artifact revered as Jesus' burial cloth.

The claim made in a new book by historian Barbara Frale drew immediate skepticism from some scientists, who maintain the shroud is a medieval forgery.

Frale, a researcher at the Vatican archives, says the faint writing emerged through computer analysis of photos of the shroud, which is not normally accessible for study.

Frale says the jumble of Greek, Latin and Aramaic includes the words "Jesus Nazarene" and mentions he was sentenced to death. She believes the text was written on a document by a clerk to identify the body and the ink then seeped into the cloth.

This is so fake that my head hurts.

A Vatican researcher

Doesn't it seems little subjective that reasercher that is funded by Vatican is exploring it, of course that he will make any evidence that will prove that it belonged to "Jesus" because church has very big interest to make evidence that their religion is "true".

She believes the text was written on a document by a clerk to identify the body and the ink then seeped into the cloth.
But why not ask if he was writing the real truth or someone told him to write that.

Frale says the jumble of Greek, Latin and Aramaic includes the words "Jesus Nazarene" and mentions he was sentenced to death.

Why would they use three languages to write his name?

One possibility is also that that men was a real person and was named Jesus but he wasn't the Jesus that Bible talks about. They could use name Jesus that belongs to some dead men and give it to the real "Jesus" and use it as the evidence to support their religion.

You could also ask, why is the shroud suddenly made available, when it "is not normally accessible for study"?

And if this shroud was meant to cover Jesus, who would put their document on the shroud and write on it with the possibility of getting ink on the shroud?

The timing of this press release is interesting. It seems that the Vatican is having a recruitment drive, and this new 'revelation' about the Turin Shroud is a way of giving the Roman Catholic church more authenticity and more appeal to disgruntled Anglicans. The following article appears on the UK Daily Mail website today:

Rowan Williams confronts the Pope over 'poaching' of clergy

The Archbishop of Canterbury has expressed his concerns to the Pope about the way the Vatican announced a scheme to welcome disaffected Anglicans into the Roman Catholic Church.

In the private meeting at the Vatican with Benedict XVI, Dr Rowan Williams made clear he had been put in an 'awkward position' because he had been given so little warning about the proposals to entice Anglicans to Rome by letting them keep many of their traditions.

But he insisted that the tone of the meeting had been 'very friendly', and relations between the two Churches were still strong. The Vatican also described the meeting as 'cordial'.

Some Church of England leaders have accused the Vatican of discourtesy in failing to consult Dr Williams. The Archbishop was distressed when the proposals were sprung on him last month with barely two weeks' notice.

Many believe the Pope is deliberately trying to poach Anglicans dismayed at the liberal drift of their own Church, undermining years of efforts to improve relations between the denominations.

But Dr Williams played down the impact of the proposed Apostolic Constitution, under which groupings of Anglicans could enter into full communion with the Catholic Church, but also preserve such elements as using Anglican prayer books.

The Vatican says its invitation came in response to pleas from Anglicans unhappy about the imminent consecration of women bishops.

Speaking after meeting the Pope, Dr Williams told Vatican Radio: 'I wanted to express some of my concerns about the way in which the announcement of the Constitution had been handled and received because clearly many Anglicans, myself included, felt that it put us in an awkward position.'

Dr Williams said the Pope's initiative did not change their basic relationship and he said that the Pope had stressed the need for unity talks to continue.

Do you see any problem in these words for serious belief ?. Then comes the clincher ink then seeped into the cloth.

some thing written 2000 years back , ink seeped into a cloth , that went into cloth and still visible only to the privileged few. can you find a trace of cloth you dumped in a trash can one month back?. No, then how can this survive?. Yes, some survives , but the extreme rarity and the grand association to the ONE and ONLY JESUS raises serious questions.

What can we say?. All sounds like mohammad atta's passport was found in millions tons of powdered steel, so he is the leader of all terrorists.?. How naive these manufacturers of these stories are or May be ,how stupid the people are ? . This is Little more than story made by a 4 year kid for a brownie.

Re: The shroud of Turin

Hi DGF,

This question was answered quite sometime back. There is also a topic discussing it here. I'll merge your post to it.
