Passport renewal - is it worth it?

The authorities in the UK and Ireland are gearing their populations up for the new 'biometric' passport scheme. Both issued cut-off points for late Oct after which applying/renewing one's passport will result in having various Orwellian points of data enlisted in one's ID.

The question is, to take this seriously or not? Given that the course we're on remains very much in place, how much kudos do others give to the notion that evading/prolonging enlisting with this scheme helps 'protect' the individual from Government, albeit in the short-run?

A well-organised campaign in the UK, No2id, comes replete with recommendations to renew one's passport now, thus avoiding registration on the new system. http://www.no2id.net/ , then click on 'Take Action' - 'Renew Your Passport'... links you to http://www.renewforfreedom.org/

I'm trying to analyse the real potential worth of such a move. While I agree that

"By renewing early in large numbers, we'll send a message to the politicians and bureaucrats who think that they can take control of who we are, and to the companies that hope to make a fortune - at our expense - helping them" - http://www.renewforfreedom.org/

..something tells me this won't bother the Pathocrats one iota! Fellow forumites, what you thinkin? UK and Irish members, have any of you taken this seriously enough to renew your passports lately?

Mine runs out in 2010, given that passports started to carry a biometric image made from your passport application picture a short while ago - I decided a while back not to renew, I'm happy enough to vacation in the UK post 2010.

I had made a mental note to renew my passport before this legislation came in, as I figured at the very least it could do no harm. I did however, COMPLETELY FORGET, unti you just reminded me! Thanks for that.

Seriously though, why make it easy(er) for them?
I will be renewing.

I wouldn't be worried about bothering the Pathocrats. It's just a matter of practicalities. How long is your current one still valid? If your current one is still good for 8 years and a new one would be good for 10, you would not gain that much. But the new one might even cost more because of the extra hi-tech stuff that gets put in.

Last time that I checked the price had gone from $50.00 us dollars to $95.00 for a new passport.
