Military Dog Comes Home From Iraq Traumatized

Heart-breaking! Like way too many soldiers, this military bomb-sniffing canine is suffering from PTS. Tragic.

From article said:
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Gina was a playful 2-year-old German shepherd when she went to Iraq as a highly trained bomb-sniffing dog with the military, conducting door-to-door searches and witnessing all sorts of noisy explosions.

She returned home to Colorado cowering and fearful. When her handlers tried to take her into a building, she would stiffen her legs and resist. Once inside, she would tuck her tail beneath her body and slink along the floor. She would hide under furniture or in a corner to avoid people.

A military veterinarian diagnosed with her post-traumatic stress disorder — a condition that experts say can afflict dogs just like it does humans...

Bet that doogie witnessed more that noisy explosions. Sigh. What a way to learn. Wish I could give Gina a big hug...or pet.

A microcosm of the effects of military service; an animal, intelligent and happy to be of service and pleasing her 'masters' returns home a cowardly and (dare I say), emotional mess after 6 months of 'service'. Her trainers plan to 'return her to duty' , possibly after another year of 'new learning'. Just about the time troops in Afganistan are to begin their 'withdrawal'. (To Iran, perhaps?) This story broke my heart in so many ways...I can't even imagine the horrors this poor animal has seen and heard. How in the world will Americans be able to handle the traumas, if war here is inevitable, once the brutalities rear themselves upon us?

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Gina was a playful 2-year-old German shepherd when she went to Iraq as a highly trained bomb-sniffing dog with the military, conducting door-to-door searches and witnessing all sorts of noisy explosions.

She returned home to Colorado cowering and fearful. When her handlers tried to take her into a building, she would stiffen her legs and resist. Once inside, she would tuck her tail beneath her body and slink along the floor. She would hide under furniture or in a corner to avoid people.

A military veterinarian diagnosed with her post-traumatic stress disorder — a condition that experts say can afflict dogs just like it does humans.
"She showed all the symptoms and she had all the signs," said Master Sgt. Eric Haynes, the kennel master at Peterson Air Force Base. "She was terrified of everybody and it was obviously a condition that led her down that road."

A year later, Gina is on the mend. Frequent walks among friendly people and a gradual reintroduction to the noises of military life have begun to overcome her fears, Haynes said.

Haynes describes her progress as "outstanding."

"Pretty fabulous, actually," added Staff Sgt. Melinda Miller, who's been Gina's handler since May. "She makes me look pretty good."

PTSD is well-documented among American servicemen and women returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but its existence in animals is less clear-cut. Some veterinarians say animals do experience it, or a version of it.

"There is a condition in dogs which is almost precisely the same, if not precisely the same, as PTSD in humans," said Nicholas Dodman, head of the animal behavior program at Tufts University's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.

But some veterinarians dislike applying the diagnosis to animals, thinking it demeans servicemen and women, Dodman said. He added that he means no offense to military personnel when he uses the term.

The military defines PTSD as a condition that develops after a life-threatening trauma. Victims suffer three types of experiences long afterward, even in a safe environment. They repeatedly re-experience the trauma in nightmares or vivid memories. They avoid situations or feelings that remind them of the event, and they feel keyed up all the time.

When Gina returned to Peterson last year after her six-month deployment in Iraq, she was no longer the "great little pup" Haynes remembered.

She had been assigned to an Army unit, and her job was to search for explosives after soldiers entered a house. The troops sometimes used noisy, blinding "flash-bang" grenades and kicked down doors, Haynes said, and Gina was once in a convoy when another vehicle was hit by an improvised bomb.

Back home at Peterson, Gina wanted nothing to do with people...

Poor dog, and there sending her back into the military! :( Obviously these people dont understand the gravity of the issue.

This is really tragic. How many other canines are in the same condition? Look at the percentage of soldiers that are in this condition. And just like with the traumatized soldiers they are going to send this poor, traumatized dog back into hell. :O The military has zero empathy and conscience.

Poor doggies...poor soldiers with a conscience.

Sometimes I just want to scream when I read stuff like this. Helloooo - both soldiers and dogs with PTS need a long rest and and should never, ever return to the hell from which they came. And then there are those miserable, evil, psychopathic or ponerized persons who say to these spiritually wounded souls: "Suck it up, soldier...dog. Stop being a coward and get back to that hell where you belong."

And the majority of US citizens go shoppin', watch their dang sports games, tv shows, and enjoy whatever pastimes they desire while the world burns. But, boy, oh, boy those citizens "support our troops" by sticking a magnetic yellow ribbon on their gas-guzzling car and berating anyone who questions the validity of the need for raining hell down on civilians - and turning our soldiers and dogs into mental patients - so as to protect us from a bogus, flase flag-instigated threat. :headbash:

That is so sad that dog had to, and will have to again, go through the horrors of war. It's really sad to see our best friends misused in such a way. The dogs have no idea what is going on or why they are there. They are just being "good doggies" and seeking to earn the love and approval of their masters. I have seen other pictures where paratroopers are using canines, with doggie-oxygen masks. I know the Navy uses dolphins for sea mine detection.

I took out most of the article, but left the beginning in. In the future, it would be best for you - or anyone - to just post a enough of an article for 'fair use' purposes (along with a link) and not the entire article.

Unfortunately there are outfits on the look-out for this sort of copyright infringement and they might go after SOTT. :)

Glad you mentioned that, I hadn't even thought about it. I am working on making a post referencing a book that someone published online, and was thinking I would want to include large sections of text but now I'll just post enough to make the point.

I'm right there with you :curse: Reading these articles makes me so angry. I definitely feel the 'heat' in my stomach.

My thoughts exactly :headbash:

SO sick of seeing so many oblivious people going on with their everyday lives. I pray for change every night.
