MORGAN HILL, Calif. - Some people in the South Bay received an unexpected wake up call early Sunday morning.

U.S. Geological Survey reports a magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck almost 7.5 miles north-northeast of Morgan Hill at 5:02 a.m. Sunday.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, but some people in the San Jose and Morgan Hill-areas posted on the USGS website that they felt the jolt.

The quake had a depth of about 1.5 miles.

Gatekeeper is gonna tell you what to think.

A warning about a purported earthquake that was "likely" to rock Southern California earlier this week gained just enough visibility to alarm some residents of the region -- before the noted seismologist Lucy Jones took to Twitter and offered valuable insight into how dubious the forecasts from some self-described predictors can be.

The ominous tweet from the @Quakeprediction account, published at 7:39 p.m. Tuesday, read: "15 HOUR WARNING: 6.7 to 7.2 earthquake is likely in the Los Angeles area - late on 09/28/2021 or 09/29/2021 - (most likely NW of Los Angeles)."

The Twitter account, which has about 45,700 followers, is connected to the website quakeprediction.com, which claims: "We have been researching earthquake prediction since 2005," adding, "We are not associated with the USGS earthquake prediction site."

The Tuesday evening tweet went on to receive more than 600 "likes" and nearly 400 retweets. According to Google Trends, searches increased for such terms such as "quake prediction" and "earthquake prediction Los Angeles."

Of course, Wednesday came and went without a major quake striking the region.

At IAC (Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias) website dedicated to "Daily evaluation of the risk at the ORM (Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos) by the volcanic plume from the Cumbre Vieja eruption" (IMO, the title speaks for itself about detachment of scientific community from real life circumstances and people around them :-(), there's a "EELabs project webcam from the ORM, looking towards the Caldera (south) centred on the plume. The image refreshes every 15 min."

Deeper earthquakes appear in Cumbre Vieja vocano, La Palma.

Earthquakes continue to occur and have been slowly increasing in numbers and magnitudes approaching magnitudes of 4.0 now.
During the past 24 hours, there have been 31 quakes of magnitudes 3.0-3.9 and 47 quakes between 2.0 and 2.9, while smaller quakes cannot be detected due to the volcanic tremor noise.

While most of the quakes are still 10-15 km deep under the central area of the volcano, a cluster of new, deeper quakes has appeared at depths around 35 km under the northeastern flank. What these mean is uncertain, but they might reflect even deeper magma intrusions in the upper mantle, perhaps suggesting that a magma supply system is establishing itself from a very deep source. That in turn could mean that the eruption could be going on for a very long time.

At the ground, deformation rates seem to have been more or less stagnant, which means that magma intruding is balanced off by lava being erupted, or, in other words, the eruption is stable at the moment.
