Crazy Storm Weather and Lightning - Global

This is a truly fascinating thread, and I love the pictures that are attached to it.

It has been known for a long time that the Earth regularly passes through streams of cosmic dust ejected by comets and asteroids as they pass through our region of space.
It is also commonly known that the dust accumulated by the Earth in this way takes a month or two to filter down from the upper atmosphere.
When it reaches the lower portions of the atmosphere, water vapour condenses on the dust and eventually precipitates out as rain. This is the source of the monsoons and other 'seasonal storms'

In the current state of play where the Earth is coming under increased cosmic interaction from bolides, then it is understandable that there will be a corresponding increase in storm and lightning activity.

So, sit back and enjoy the show!

Yesterday, apparently, there was a massive lightning activity above Europe, and within 24 hours 329.106 lightnings were recorded.

An enormous thunderstorm struck Moscow Wednesday night, with heavy rain, lightning and flooding.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry issued a thunderstorm warning, reporting wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour.

The storm led to zero-visibility conditions.

Downed power lines and fallen trees, caused major traffic delays and flash flooding.

В Москве прошла гроза, которую назвали сильнейшей за 20 лет. Правда быстро кончилась. Если бы такой ливень продолжился еще хотя бы час мы бы утонули, а так ничего - все в порядке.

Translation
In Moscow has passed the storm, called the strongest in 20 years. Truth quickly ran out. If the rain continued at least another hour we would have drowned, and nothing - everything is in order.

VIVID RED SPRITE BURST - Supercell Lightning Storm 5/16/2016
Published on Jun 1, 2016

https://youtu.be/HOLeZZVKpLU
I managed to capture on video several vivid "Red Sprite" bursts, from a cluster of supercell thunderstorms putting out near constant lightning near Amarillo, TX. I was positioned about 20 miles to the south of the storms, near the town of Tulia, TX, looking off to the northeast. This definitely ranks up there with one of the best lightning storms I have ever seen. A more extended video can be viewed via the annotation link at the end of this video.

This video has been reviewed by several meteorologists at various NWS offices, as well as the Storm Prediction Center, and deemed to be 100% legitimate Red Sprites. The camera I used to capture this sequence was a Sony A7S II with a Zeiss 35mm f1.4 lens (wide open) with the camera itself set to an ISO of between 32000 and 51000.

''Storm Chasing'' 4K UHD Lightning/Thunderstorms Timelapse Photography Video
Published on Jul 3, 2016

Collection of year Storm Chasing Lightning and Thunder, heavy rain and Clouds.
All videos are Photographed in Eastern Europe in Baltic States- Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Lightning is a sudden electrostatic discharge during an electrical storm between electrically charged regions of a cloud, between that cloud and another cloud, or between a cloud and the ground.

There will be more thunderstorms this year and later, subscribe ''Race The World'' channel to see future timelapse projects.
Used lightning realtime maps to chase biggest storms and largest cloud explosions.

If you have not chased storm never, I suggest you to do it. You dont have to be in filming or photography. That feeling when thunder shakes the ground and strikes huge lighning bolts, its one of the most amazing nature experiences and feelings.
For this video used Canon 100D 10-18mm lense.

To come up with some stats. Siemens uses in Europe about 160 Station where they can detect thunderbolts that hit ground and thunderbolts in general. It is called BLIDS but unfortunately not all statistics are listed for example of the UK or other countries or you have to pay a high price to get some data. Nonetheless statistics are available for Germany. In 2007 over 1 million lightning strikes hit ground or buildings and compared to 2015 were 549.000 strikes were registered.

For 2016 are no data available yet to get a minor guess how this year is going.

Remembering that UK has already experienced more thunderstorms this year than its average for a whole year - which was posted in 19th June when the season for lightning begins and lasts through to at least August.

From Sott, the article is from 20th July:

Scotland hit by 25,000 lightning bolts in one night; 10 times the normal rate

Lightning storm over Edinburgh taken looking over the Royal Infirmary

Scotland was hit by 25,000 lightning bolts as the country's heatwave finished with a bang on Wednesday.

While parts of the country baked in 29C heat during the day, the hot weather continued through the night with lows of 19C.

The humid conditions saw Scotland and surrounding seas hit by around 20,000 of the 39,302 lightning strikes between 3pm Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday.

Ninety per cent of the strikes came in a six-hour blast from 4am to 10am on Wednesday, Met Office UK area lightning detection system data passed to Netweather showed.

Met Office figures showed 25,000 lighting strikes is 10 times higher than the usual number of strikes from a lightning storm.

The 25,000 bolts contained 6million kWh of energy - enough to boil water for 225million cups of tea or provide the daily energy needs of 500,000 people - or the population of Edinburgh - University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and Ofgem data showed.

A dramatic lightning location map showed Scotland almost invisible under the strikes.

Another 5,000 strikes in Scotland were forecast by Netweather by Wednesday evening.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill said: "There was so much frequent lightning due to so much energy in the air. Impacts were expected by Wednesday evening."

Netweather forecaster Paul Michaelwhite said: "Extremely severe lightning made it one of the most memorable lightning episodes for years."
