Story of "Compagnonnage" is not simply.
What official culture kwows about is:

Differents professionnal corporations of itinerant workers ( stone cuttlers, carpenters ant others craftmans) appear in the XII-XIIIth century next to professionnal guilds existing since VIIIth century.
Auguste BONVOUS in his " Etude sociale sur les corporations compagnonniques" says that it is only in 1470 that municipal archives refers to "Compagnons du Devoir" - companions of Duty.
However, since the XIIth c. paintings and monuments are wearing characteritics signs of companions ( dies, "guilbrette"-i can't translate-, Hiram ( i'll come back to this after) , the Jakin and boaz columns, wild boar and rabbit , which are symbols of master and novice, etc... Some are commons to Freemasons., like compasses.)
In 1258 , Etienne BOILEAU mentions in his "Livre des métiers" 1268 journeyman workers.
The Abbé GRANDIDIER found in Strasbourg's cathedral ( XIIIth) tracks of companions rituals.
The Council of Rouen in 1189 and Avignon in 1326 order excommunication to clandestine brotherhood whose members regularly gathering, taking on oath and promising to help each other.

There's something very strange : the catholic Church ( and Royal Power after) have always been repressive with the companion, comdamning their rituals as blasphemous, sacrilegious and heretical. Companions' Initiation called upon a previous tradition to christianism.
They swearded on the Gospels to not say what they're doing or see doing., etc...
Yet, they were the main cathedrals' builders and Templars are known to have been their protectors during churches' construction.

For those who are interested in cathedrals architecture, a french animated site about Villard de HONNECOURT (XIIIth century) and his famous "carnet" :
http://classes.bnf.fr/villard/pres/index.htm
where you can find technical solution for building and geometric dmonstrations through Companions'signs.

Little disgression : Horse symbol is very present in companions tradition. Remember horse = cheval (in french) = cavale = cabale

Fulcanelli in " Mystery of Cathedrals" talked about the builders as Francs-Maçons or Frimasons( in the french book)

We have seen before that some signs are common both companions and Freemasons. Is it a way to talk about Companions without quoting them? or a clue that Companions and Freemasons are the same people ( today nobody can tell about , there is no real clues for that) . At least, all Freemasons are not Companions and all Companions are probably not Freemasons.
A link with C's answer about Freemasons traditions since 7000 years in the 33e degree?

Companions are divided in several brotherhood. the mainly :

- Compagnons du Devoir
- Compagnons du Devoir de Liberté

The "Devoir" (Duty) means : the whole rules which manage rituals, the funder's legendary story, and the symbols'sequence constituing Initiation."
Each brotherhood ( and I suppose : each profession in each brotherhood) has a particular Duty.

Companions of Duty got for Funders Maitre JACQUES and Père SOUBISE.
Companions of Liberty's Duty are called "Enfants de Salomon" (Salomon's Children) or "Gavots".

Legend of "Maître Jacques":
2 versions : the first is that He is Jacques de Molay, the last Templars' Master killed by Philippe le Bel.
The second , reported of Louis Charpentier in " Les Jacques et le mystère de Compostelle" is that Maître Jacques was a Pyrennean born in "Carte" or "Cartès", stone cuttler since he was 15 years old. In the hypothesis of his real existence, he were of the Ligure race , those who have covered the Occident with Dolmens.(Charpentier precizes that "Jacques" is a generic name for this builders and farmers people , people of earth and stone, pre-celts, who went everywhere in occidental and mediterranean world. Their University , the "Way of Stars".
They were speaking "argot" . Workers passed masters to masters like pilgrims hermitage to hermitage.)

Argot - Art Cot - and you know what? Companions talk about "Coterie" as their brotherhood!

So Maître Jacques is called by Hiram to help for the construction of Salomon'sTemple!
He could be the builder of Jakin column. Charpentier says that if Bible's translator give to Jakin the meaning of "he will strengthen" , in Basque language it mean " the scholar".

Always according to legend , Père Soubise was a carpenter companion of Maître Jacques , but come back in France , rivalry appeared between us and their respective novices. Maître Jacques was killed by one of them.
All the story of companions is darken by bloody fighting , there is a lot of historics reports about.
Alliances between corporations are not rare, too.

Today all French people know " les Compagnons du Tour de France" ; They got the reputation to be very talented and serious workers.

I find interesting the connection with :

Companions/Freemasons - Argot/ art cot - coterie/ cabale-cheval
cathedrals ( Auch - Pyrénées- Way of Stars - Compostelle - Jacques)

A last thing :
In " Mystery of cathedrals" Fulcanelli said that Hiram ( a symbol for companions) is near from aran, iran ( = iron in provençal language) and "magnesie" ( magnetic center?)
OK now what could we do with the Green Language with "Salomon" ?
Salomon - Shalomon- shalman - shaman ?...

Hiram (the magnet) , builder of the Salomon/Shaman's Temple?
Companions, attracted by Hiram to build Shaman's Temple?

Funny , isn't it?
