A bus has driven into a pedestrian underpass in the center of Moscow, killing at least 5 and injuring 15 others, a source in the emergency services told Sputnik, with the death toll being later confirmed by police.

According to the mayor of Moscow, who has arrived at the scene of the crash, two people are in critical condition as a result of the accident.

"According to preliminary information, a bus drove into the underground passage at the metro station Slavyansky Bulvar," the source said.

The driver of the bus, who was detained earlier in the day, said as quoted by the Russian Investigative Committee that "the bus, while being at the bus stop, suddenly began to move on its own. At the same time, despite his attempts to stop the bus, the braking system malfunctioned and the bus continued to move."

Police have said in a statement that "two versions are being examined: the driver failed to manage the vehicle or a malfunction of the vehicle."

According to the source, a terrorist act is not considered as the possible cause for the accident.

According to media reports, three injured persons have been removed from under the wheels of the bus.

The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, has expressed his condolences to the relatives of those killed in the crash and stated that the authorities are providing the necessary urgent assistance to the injured. Sobyanin has vowed to conduct a "thorough" probe into the deadly accident.

Three medical services' helicopters have evacuated 4 injured people from the scene of the crash.

At least 20 people have been killed and 24 others have been injured in a road accident in the Philippine city of Agoo in La Union province, local media has reported.

A bus collided with a jeepney, killing 20 of the 29 passengers that the car was carrying, the accident happened at around 3:30 a.m. local time (19:30 GMT on Sunday), the Philippine Star newspaper reported, citing the Chief Inspector of Agoo police Roy Villanueva.

"The investigation is still ongoing. We are still looking for the possible cause of the accident," Villanueva said.

The Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said that it would wait for the police report before suspending any of the companies involved.

According to the LTFRB spokesperson, initial information shows that the bus appeared to be in its lane and collided with the jeepney when the latter tried to overtake it along the highway.

According to Geo TV channel, the accident occurred late Saturday night on the Indus Highway near the city of Sehwan in the country's Sindh province.

The local police said that among those killed there were six children and three women.

Drivers of both buses managed to flee shortly after the accident, the police are searching for the suspects.

Road accidents are common in Pakistan. In early October, 14 people were killed and 30 others injured when a passenger bus collided with a van in the northwest of Balochistan province. In early November, 27 people died and about 60 were injured after a speeding bus fell off a bridge in a town of Talagang, Punjab province.

At least 34 people died on Sunday as a result of collision of a bus with a truck in Kenya, local media reported.

The incident took place near the settlement of Migaa at the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, the Daily Nation media outlet reported. According to Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Zero Arom, the collision occurred as the bus was moving on the wrong lane.

A total of 28 passengers of the bus as well as two people from the truck died at the site, while four more people died later in a hospital. At least three children are among the victims of the collision.

The incident also left 22 people injured, who were sent to hospitals. The rescue operation resulted in heavy traffic jams.

LIMA, Peru: At least 36 people were killed when a bus tumbled down a cliff onto a rocky beach Tuesday along a narrow stretch of highway known as the “Devil’s Curve,” Peruvian police and fire officials said.

At least 36 dead when bus plunges onto rocky beach in Peru Tuesday 2 January 2018
http://www.arabnews.com/node/1218221/world

The bus was carrying 57 passengers to Peru’s capital when it was struck by a tractor trailer shortly before noon and plunged down the slope, said Claudia Espinoza with Peru’s voluntary firefighter brigade.

The blue bus came to rest upside down on a strip of shore next to the Pacific, the lifeless bodies of passengers strewn among the rocks.

“There is a large number of fatal victims,” Col. Dino Escudero told RPP radio.

Rescuers were working to pull victims from the hard-to-reach area in Pasamayo, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Lima.

No road leads directly to the beach, complicating rescue efforts, Espinoza said, though police and firefighters managed to transport six survivors with serious injuries to nearby hospitals by helicopter.

Traffic accidents are common along Peru’s roadways, with more than 2,600 people killed in 2016. More than three dozen died when three buses and a truck collided in 2015 on the main costal highway. Twenty people were killed in November when a bus plunged off a bridge into a river in the southern Andes.

The nation’s deadliest traffic crash on record happened in 2013 when a makeshift bus carrying 51 Quechua Indians back from a party in southeastern Peru fell off a cliff into a river, killing everyone on board.

Espinoza said the passengers in Tuesday’s crash included many returning to Lima after celebrating the New Year’s holiday with family outside the city.

The highway is known as the “Devil’s Curve” because it is narrow, frequently shrouded in mist and curves along a cliff that has seen numerous accidents. Police said the bus fell an estimated 80 meters (262 feet).

Miguel Sidia, a transportation expert in Peru, said that while road conditions in the Andean nation have improved in recent years, lack of driver education and little enforcement of road rules still lead to many fatalities each year.

He called on authorities to immediately conduct studies into building a new highway farther from the cliff where the accident occurred.

“As a Peruvian, it’s shameful,” he said.

A representative of the National Police said that 25 to 30 dead has been found after a bus crash, yet the number can increase, the state news agency Andina reported.

"The Hospital of Camana admitted 14 people that have been injured in an accident, five more have been transferred to hospitals in Arequipa and three others were transported by helicopter because they were of the utmost urgency," the Peru State Secretariat informed.

According to preliminary data, the driver lost control of the bus, and it pulled down from the Pan-American Highway in the Arequipa region, Peru.
The bus fell down a cliff from a height of about 200 meters.

The Ministry of Health informed through the social network Twitter that it provides care to the wounded in a crash.

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, President of the country, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

"All services have been activated for the immediate support, to rescue and transfer the victims to the nearest health centers for their immediate attention," the head of state said.

Accidents caused by reckless driving on poorly maintained mountain roads claim dozens of lives every year in Peru. In January 52 people died in the country's worst road fatality in four decades.

A bus carrying military servicemen and civilians exploded in central Sri Lanka injuring 27 people on Wednesday, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported.

https://sputniknews.com/asia/201802211061867354-sri-lanka-bus-explosion-jaffna-diyatalawa/

The bus was heading from the city of Jaffna to the town of Diyatalawa, the newspaper stated.

"The explosion cannot be ruled out as an act of terrorism as of yet. Nevertheless, a highly explosive substance inside the bus may have caused the explosion. The cause can be ruled out after the government analyst inspects the scene," Sri Lankan army spokesman Brig. Sumith Atapattu was quoted as saying.

According to the spokesman, the number of casualties could be higher, but part of passengers was transferred before the incident to another bus heading to the same destination.

Bus crash in Hong Kong earlier this month:

Hong Kong bus crash survivor describes horror of accident that killed 19 people
http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/community/article/2132892/hong-kong-bus-crash-survivor-describes-horror-accident

The smell of incense filled the air along a usually quiet stretch of Tai Po Road on Sunday, as dozens of family members gathered roadside to mourn loved ones lost to one of Hong Kong’s deadliest traffic accidents.

“Who wouldn’t be angry?” asked a mourner, surnamed Yip, his eyes welling with tears for his dead brother-in-law, “when a family member is gone in a moment as brief as a bus making a turn?”

The same question was gnawing at the minds of some 200 mourners attending a ceremony on the section of Tai Po Road on Sunday afternoon, held by a Taoist master to help “call back the spirits of their loved ones”. Several lawmakers and officials including Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, No 2 in the government, attended.

Just a few hours earlier, blood stains were still visible on the road along with bricks, upturned earth and debris. Copies of racing newspapers dated February 10, soaked red, lay scattered on the ground.

On Saturday evening, 18 passengers were killed and more than 60 injured when a double-decker bus operated by KMB, route 872, toppled on its side as the driver negotiated a turn near Tai Po Tsuen. The death toll rose to 19 on Sunday.

One survivor, named Tsui, chalked it up to bad luck that he got on the bus that evening. The special service route ferries passengers between Sha Tin Racecourse and Tai Po.

Tsui said he opted to take the bus as he did not “play well” after a day at the races.

The bus arrived about 10 minutes late and a long passenger queue had formed. When the bus departed, it was packed, with many people standing.

Not long into the journey, Tsui said he knew something was wrong. He recalled the bus “speeding” downhill before it overturned, skidding 40 metres (44 yards) before finally coming to a stop.
Tsui said he felt as if the bus was travelling at 80 to 100km/h, where the maximum allowed speed is 70km/h.

“I held onto the handle bars in front of me,” he said, demonstrating with his arms extended as if he was gripping something tightly with both hands. “If I had not done that and had let myself fall, I would have perished.”

The crash caused windows to shatter and as the bus skidded, a fire broke out on board and passengers were sent flying.

“They all fell. They wouldn’t have died if not for that,” Tsui said. “Underneath the shattered glass, things were catching fire.”

In the aftermath, Tsui recalled seeing a woman with a twisted neck and another passenger with shards of glass protruding from his head.

Tsui, who suffered pain in the upper left side of his body, offered his account as he sought treatment at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in Tai Po early on Sunday.

He and others tried to escape through one opening, but it would not budge due to damage.

“Luckily, someone pried open a hole for me to get out,” he said.

Tsui later returned to the bus to pull out other passengers. He estimated that he helped five or six people.

Chartered mechanical engineer and veteran traffic accident investigator Lo Kok-keung estimated that the bus may have entered the downhill bend at a speed of up to 68km/h.

Based on the arc of the skid marks he observed at the scene stretching some 100 metres, and the gross weight of a full double-decker bus – about 22 tonnes – Lo calculated that it would have only taken about 12.4 tonnes of centrifugal force to overturn the bus.

“The safe speed to enter the turn should only be about 40 to 50km/h,” said Lo, adding that it would be prudent for transport officials to cut the speed limit of Tai Po Road, parts of which include several bends and slopes.

Kwok Wai-kwong, chairman of the KMB Staff Union, said all KMB buses had an automatic speed limiter which prevented the double-decker from going more than 70km/h. But he said it was possible that a double-decker travelling down a slope could potentially reach 75 to 80km/h.

The driver has been arrested for dangerous driving causing death, but police are looking into the possibility of manslaughter, pending further investigation. The government has pledged to launch a judge-led inquiry into the tragedy.

At least 13 were killed and 20 injured in the central Anatolian province of Çorum when a bus slammed into a truck and burst into flames in the early hours of March 13, CNN Türk has reported.

The authorities fear the death toll may rise.

A bus on route from İstanbul to Tokat slammed into a truck from behind near the Osmancık district of Çorum at around 6.00 am on March 13 and then caught fire.

Osmancık Mayor Hamza Karataş initially said 10 people had died and 18 others injured in the accident, though CNN Türk later raised the death toll to 13.

Firefighter teams and ambulances have been dispatched to the scene.

The truck was parked in the emergency lane when the bus hit the vehicle, the Çorum Governor’s office said in a statement.

“The accident occurred on the Istanbul-Samsun D-100 highway at 05:35. An investigation regarding the accident is currently underway and futher information will be shared with the public after the investigation is completed,” the statement added.

Firefighter teams, units from the local gendarmerie forces and ambulances are at the scene, carrying out operations under the supervision of the local public prosecutor.

It is reported that since the bus was completely burnt out, it was difficult to determine the exact number of casualties.

Those injured in the accident have been taken to two nearby hospitals.

Meanwhile, the Council of Europe (CoE) has expressed condolences over the deadly accident.

“We think of the families and friends of the victims of this terrible accident,” Daniel Holtgen, a spokesperson of CoE Secretary General Thorbjrn Jagland, wrote on his official Twitter account on March 13.

“We express our heartfelt condolences to our member state Turkey,” Holtgen said.

A bus carrying a Canadian junior hockey team Humboldt Broncos collided with a semi-truck on Friday on a road in the southern Saskatchewan province, leading to fatalities, authorities said.

A spokesman for Nipawin Royal Canadian Mounted Police told reporters RCMP was conducting a rescue operation together with multiple emergency personnel some 19 miles north of Tisdale.

"We can confirm there are fatalities among the passengers on the bus. There are also a number of serious injuries. We cannot confirm numbers at this time," he said.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) said on Twitter it was aware of an accident involving the bus of the Humboldt Broncos team.

Nipawin Hawks, who were scheduled to play against them on Friday night, said on Facebook that the game had been cancelled.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe expressed his condolences in a Facebook posting and thanked first responders for their courageous response "under the most difficult circumstances imaginable."

According to police, out of 28 bus passengers, 14 have been injured, while 3 of them are in a critical condition.

The deadly crash of the bus, carrying Humboldt Broncos players, that collided with a truck on a rural highway in Saskatchewan took place late on Friday. An investigation is underway in order to establish the reasons and circumstances of the accident.

Following the news, Twitter users have been expessing condolences to the families of the victims, using the hashtag #PrayersForHumboldt.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau has expressed deep condolences, saying, "I cannot imagine what these parents are going through and my heart foes out to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy, in the Humbolt community and beyond."

Son Of Former NHL Player Among Those Dead In Canadian Bus Crash

More details about the victims of a deadly bus crash in Canada’s Saskatchewan province emerged Sunday, a day after the tragic accident rocked their small community and the larger hockey world.

The bus was carrying a junior hockey team when it collided with a tractor-trailer Friday evening, according to police. Fifteen people were killed and at least 14 others injured.

Jaxon Joseph, the 20-year-old son of former NHL player Chris Joseph, is among the dead, according to Jaxon’s uncle, Mike Joseph, who told Sportsnet he found out Saturday his nephew had died.

Chris Joseph used to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the team expressed sadness about the news on Twitter. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to Pittsburgh Penguins alumnus Chris Joseph, whose son, Jaxon, was among those who tragically passed away in the Humboldt Broncos bus accident.”

Jaxon’s former teammates on the Surrey Eagles told CNN broadcast partner CBC that he’d be missed.

“He was just a hardworking guy,” said Jackson Ross. “He always had a smile on his face. It was contagious, I’d say.”

Cause of the crash is being investigated - The crash occurred around 5 p.m. Friday north of Tisdale, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as the team was headed for the town of Nipawin for a playoff game. RCMP Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki said the tractor-trailer, traveling west on Highway 335, collided with the bus, which was traveling north on Highway 35.

Three of the injured are in critical condition, according to the RCMP. Authorities have yet to identify the victims. Twenty-nine people were on the bus.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the collision, Zablocki said. He was initially detained but was later released, and he is not currently the subject of a criminal investigation.

“Our investigators will be looking at all aspects of this accident to determine what took place,” Zablocki said. “It’s too early to comment on the cause of the collision.”

The Humboldt team was scheduled to play the Nipawin Hawks in the fifth game of a best-of-seven semifinal playoff series Friday. The teams played a lengthy game Wednesday that Nipawin won 6-5 in three overtimes in Humboldt, leaving Nipawin with a 3-1 series lead.

Two broadcasting employees among the dead - Logan Schatz, a 20-year-old team captain and Saskatchewan native, was also killed, his father, Kelly Schatz, told The Canadian Press.

Family members were comforting each other during this difficult time, Schatz said.

A website for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League said Schatz had been named player of the month in February.

Two employees of local radio station Bolt FM who were traveling with the team also lost their lives, according to DiscoverHumboldt.com. Both the website and the radio station belong to parent company Golden West Broadcasting.

The site confirmed that play-by-play announcer Tyler Bieber and Brody Hinz were killed.

“It is with great sadness that we have learned both Tyler and Brody were victims of this tragedy,” said Lyndon Friesen, the president of Golden West Radio, a subsidiary of Golden West Broadcasting, in a statement. Bieber traveled with the team often, and Hinz had just recently joined the company.

Pain felt far and wide - The tragedy was felt across Canada, where hockey is the dominant sport and many young players take long bus rides to tournaments.

Humboldt, a town of about 6,000, has a long tradition of fielding teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The players, ranging in age from 16 to 21, come from different parts of Canada and stay with host families during the season, according to the team’s website.

“Our Broncos family is in shock as we try to come to grips with our incredible loss,” Kevin Garinger, the team’s president, said in a statement.

The hockey community and others rallied around the victims and their families after news of the crash, offering financial assistance.

Expressions of support poured in, much of them focused on a Twitter photo that showed three injured players grasping each other’s hands while lying in hospital beds.

By Sunday morning, a GoFundMe page for the players and their families had raised more than $3.2 million, the result of nearly 50,000 donations.

Many of those donations purportedly came from the hockey community. NHL teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins gave money, as did hockey equipment manufacturer Bauer Hockey, which shared a link to the GoFundMe on its Twitter account.

Friday’s crash brought back memories of another highway accident that claimed the lives of hockey players in Saskatchewan. In 1986, four members of the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League died in a crash in the western part of the province, CNN partner CBC reported.

NHL, Trudeau offer condolences - Members of the National Hockey League expressed sadness over the news.

“We sent condolence, comfort and strength to all affected by the devastating crash involving the Humboldt Broncos’ team bus,” the National Hockey League said on Twitter.

Cam Talbot, a goalie for the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL, tweeted: “After all the hours spent on a bus with the boys over the years this one really hits home. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and communities affected by this horrible tragedy. #PrayersForHumboldt”

“I can’t imagine being the parent or the wife or the kids at home going through something like this,” Toronto Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said at a press conference. “It hurts.”

On Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Donald Trump offered condolences on Twitter.

I have never seen anything like the outpouring of grief that is occurring in Canada now in response to this tragedy. It seems to have touched the hearts of everyone in the land, the whole country seems to be in mourning. So much so, that it's crossed my mind that this might be in some way a kind of a marker, or turning point event. Yes, it has been interesting as people from all points came together in the grieving process. I watched the different ministries talk at the initial gathering, and there are no real words that can speak for that local community gathering, and those communities are tightly knit. There is also the reality that some of the kids were with extended families as billeted from their own provinces - we had such a kid stay with us over the winter months in the early 2000's, and our neigour was their bus driver who would gather them up on a Friday and drive them in horrendous weather over mountain roads to their next game in another community, and they in turn would travel to ours.

Perhaps there will be a turning point as you pondered this, don't know. Had noticed on SOTT at near the same time that 27 children had also died in a bus crash across the world in Himachal, and all the other posts above included. So at the same time other communities around the world gathered to grieve for their own children.

Despite how things seem in the world, that is the amazing thing about communities of people, their ability to connect with each other through very difficult situations. This is what provides real meaning where politics is left aside.

Add to this the number of children, who died in the Kemerovo fire in Russia. It seems like there were a lot of chaotic events involving children lately.
