Bread and Circus

With the football/soccer Euro's currently being exempt from most Covid restrictions that are still in place around the globe for the rest of us I thought now would be the right time to post this particular poem of mine that was written some time ago shortly after I realised what the purpose of modern organised professional sport was and why governments and corporations were so eager to sponsor it or lend it their affiliation. Having been a big football/soccer fan myself here in the UK for years I felt I had at least some grounding on the subject. I of course accept there are many perfectly enjoyable and varied wholesome sports out there and would not want to discourage people doing what they enjoy. This poem is aimed purely at the circus of money driven professional sport as we know it today and its hidden and not so hidden dualistic reinforcements.

Bread and Circus

Football is an occultist trick
Created by Masons
To make the mind sick
Founded in a lodge
By an association
Here comes the new God
Of the slave population
The blues and the reds
Divided allegiance
Overruled by the ref
The result is a grievance
The magical symbols
Of foxes and owls
Displayed in the rituals
Of wizards and fouls
Uphold superstitions
Dare tomorrow, to dream
Make the shirt your tradition
And follow the team
And the people exult it
For the heroes they love
And the ones who insult it
Well, you bay for their blood
It's a sport sacrificial
For a claim on your heart
You're a fan, it's official
It's got you playing a part
It's seen as a science
Or a written law
It's a mental addiction
And the aim is to score
In the pastures of England
From the shot to the pass
It was cradled and nurtured
By the working class
For what else is there
When you're given your limits
When you're wallowing nowhere
But your team might just win it
It's a game in a game
All the players unseen
Disappointment and blame
Keep you glued to the screen
So you serve the dimensions
Of the football pitch
Where it's quadrants and circles
Take the form of a witch
By its spirit you're taken
And a covenant made
There's a curse on your conscience
When the matches are played
To believe that you're nothing
Is the chant made for all
To belong in a crowd
Is the draw of the ball
It's the magic you share
For the questions not asked
It's the struggle you bare
For the fear that is masked
Yet still in the background
Where the highest reside
In the darkness of suits
Is the folly of pride
Is football not purpose?
Or so you're led to believe
The thrill of the circus
Is the daring trapeze
Where danger and risk
Keep the masses enthralled
And glamour and drama
Invite the poor to applaud
Applauding their prison
And the fee that it cost
For another man's vision
And the Cup Final lost
Please remain seated
The game is afoot
Your job is to watch it
And stay where you're put
The manager manages
Reinforces the goal
To trust to authority
The keys to your soul
Make it all about winning
And profit and glory
A never ending beginning
Will recycle the story
Coz football is vital
In the oppression of man
And the most willing of slaves
Is the football fan

Very well made indeed! As a thank you, let me try to answer you in kind :

Football stadiums
modern times coliseums
far from the mundane
they help forget the pain

But viewers beware
Not to be caught unaware
Of what's really going on
For there would be no tomorrow to

Well... At least it rhymes  I'll do better next time. In any case, please keep them coming @Willfez74. Any creative endeavor is very refreshing during those times!
