Auch Cathedral

"Produced between 1507 and 1513" !!?!?

The amount of detail on those windows is astonishing. Its hard to imagine one person producing anything like that - even in the last 50 years with the technology we now have available... I didnt think it possible.

Yeah, it's pretty astonishing. I'm going to do the choir next as a separate album. Wait'll you see that! I need to go back over and get a series of photos in exact order. I've got a ton of them, but they are all jumbled up.

When you take the windows and other older pieces together with the choir, it is just so much you can't process it. I've been there about 20 times or more and each time, I get sensory overload. What was nice was going through the photos and zooming in for features that are often missed when you are there in person.

The windows are really huge and set in places where you can't step back and get a good straight on shot, so I did the best I could. It would be nice if a professional could get in there with some good equipment, some scaffolding, and get the shots dead on in segments and then assemble them into single images.

I tell people that Notre Dame in Paris is boring after Auch Cathedral and they look at me in amazement. But now maybe you can understand why I say this.

Hi Laura…
That’s funny considering my interesting situation. I had always dreamed about seeing Notre Dame in Paris. And when I was coming to the QFS workshop, I planned to go to Paris just for that reason. But things turned out differently and I didn’t get to go and was VERY disappointed and thought I had missed a chance of a lifetime to see this cathedral full of ‘hidden messages’. But when we came to the workshop you took us to see Auch (coincidense?) and boy… did that make up for missing Notre Dame.
Thanks Laura!

Nina

found these images of French vitrae - they are not from Auch Cathedral, but from Lyon and are excruciatingly beautiful. Could i post a link here?

This could most likely be done even with the pictures you took, because software can (to a reasonable extent) take care of changing the color, brightness, angle, zoom level, and other properties of the pictures, and then fitting all the different parts together automatically (well, with human assistance, but almost automatically) as a big panorama creating one big seamless picture with no sign that it was ever many pictures (unless the various pictures were just REALLY different in quality etc). You'd just have to make sure that you have every part of the window (or whatever you want the panorama of) at least somewhere in some picture. Let me know if you have any particular part that you'd wanna see in a panorama (that exists from your pics) and I can give it a shot. Unless you meant like the whole thing lol.

Also, would be cool to create that 3d panoramic view for it, like they have for other more popular tourist attractions, that gives you controls to spin around in 360 degrees and zoom in and out at will, dynamically adjusting the resolution when you zoom in by replacing the new "zoom level" with a totally new, closer picture. So you could like view it from a distance, and start zooming in, and zoom in to something the size of an ant, in full high resolution detail, etc. But that obviously WOULD require a professional photographer, a high resolution camera, and a LOT of pictures of basically everything at every angle/distance. But the final product is really awesome.

Hi,

I can't find a particular link to an image so since I took it from the site I wanted to embed what I thought was sort of weird.

rennes.jpg

I took and cropped the picture down and it belongs to LKJ/Cassiopaea.org. I hope it was ok to take it and share it for this.

If you look closely at the image there is a left hand coming between the two persons squatting. It doesn't appear it can be the hand of either person. I'm saying the person kneeling on the right has their left side blocked by the hand, but the hand does not belong to that person since it crosses the line of their abdomen. The person squatting on the left does not own the hand since their left hand is clearly visible.

I hope I'm not making anything that is NOT out of this, but it reminded me somewhat of the last supper hand. Am I hallucinating or is there something odd about this? I don't think the artist could have made such a mistake by accident since he/she does a remarkable job throughout all the other Rennes images. The image I (r. click saved) downloaded is named rennes35.jpg.

Sorry I know this is not the Rennes topic but I thought it "might" be relevant here.

Salutes!

Edit: Since my command over language is not that great I made this image to make my point.

I found this link of a church which I presume is somewhere in France.

Absolutely amazing and you get the feeling that you are in there. You can zoom in, zoom out, look up or down and scroll 360 degrees.

Now if only someone can do it for Auch Cathedral...

You'll be pleased to know that someone did: _http://www.gillesvidal.com/saintemarie.htm

Thanks Smallwood for sharing this link. I can now visualize the stalls.

Ahhh, the alabaster. This is exceedingly cool - yet so, so limited. It's like getting just the smallest glimpse of all that is there. Very enjoyable, nonetheless! And, well worth spending some time on, I think.

I totally agree! Very interesting esp. to those who have never
been there, physically!

I wonder who each of those (wooden) characters are! So much symbolism
in there.

I noticed the walls, the support structures -- seemingly missing something
as if they were removed since that time-period. Didn't Hitler, his men, or
someone other had removed anything or was it something else?

Did you notice up higher, there seems to be a door, and possibly a platform
that was taken away from it? That wall seemed to have square cuts just
below the door - hinting at supports for such a platform?

So many mysteries!

Awesome nonetheless, - but too bad one cannot zoom up very close to
look at intricate details of interest!

Actually, it's the Piaristenkirche Maria Treu, in Vienna

And no I'm not a super expert, it's just mentionned here:

Hi Prayers for Rain,

Actually I was looking for better images of the Auch Cathedral and stumble on the link above which then lead me to post it here in the hope that somebody might have a similar link. And so I wasn't paying too much attention to where the church was. :-[

Thanks for the correction.
