A French book about censorship is: "Le Livre noire de la censure" edited by Emmanuel Peirrat. Seuil, 352 pages., 21, 50 Euro. Honestly I do not have the book, but there is a very interesting interview with the editor in Le Nouvelle Observateur 24th - 30th of April 2008: _http://hebdo.nouvelobs.com/hebdo/parution/p2268/articles/a373267.html The book is available from _http://www.amazon.fr/livre-noir-censure-Magaly-Lhotel/dp/2020942984/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221836055&sr=8-8 and second hand copies sell for around 10 Euros. A pretty miserable machine translation one can have on _http://uk.babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&intl=1&fr=bf-home&trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fhebdo.nouvelobs.com%2Fhebdo%2Fparution%2Fp2268%2Farticles%2Fa373267.html&lp=fr_en&btnTrUrl=Translate

Emmanuel Pierrat is a lawyer and makes a living for himself and 15 people by reading and editing manuscripts, advising artists and writers how to not offend the about 450 texts regulating how we communicate and express ourselves, (in France that is,, but likely not very different in many other countries). He says it is good we have a constitution that speaks of freedom of expression, but to all effects, censorship exists and especially self censorship which is caused by fear of violating some law governing what we can say and how. The last phrase of Emmanuel Pierrat in the interview is, that he is concerned when a museum director calls him to ask if he can make a exhibition of contemporary art.

Not a French speaker really, I can not bring the content of this book much closer to the reader. Perhaps others can add more by reading the book, or enlarge the resume of the article, if interesting.
